Right Wing Attacks 'Dear Abby': “Abby has flown under the radar for years dispensing radical advice"
Right wing attacks ‘Dear Abby.’

In 2007, “Dear Abby” author Jeanne Phillips publicly — and controversially — spoke out in support of gay marriage. Since that time, she has become a target of conservatives. Today, the Washington Times highlights a recent analysis by the right-wing Culture and Media Institute, which concludes that Phillips has repeatedly “rejected traditional morality“:

“Abby has flown under the radar for years dispensing radical advice on matters of sexual morality while enjoying a reputation for hard-nosed, common-sense advice,” says Robert Knight, director of the institute. “We thought people ought to know there’s a pattern here that’s consistent throughout her career.”

“Dear Abby, overall, dispenses good advice on most other matters,” Mr. Knight says, “but when it comes to sex, she is a disciple of the sexual revolution, which basically says if it feels good, do it.”

Last year, PFLAG honored Phillips with its “Straight for Equality Award.” “Dear Abby is one of the most trusted advice columnists in the world and rightfully so,” said PFLAG spokesman Steve Ralls.

2. the usual conservative generalization
I read "Abby" nearly every day, and she is in favor of stable relationships. That she is compassionate and understanding that all relationships are not heterosexual is, to my mind, a plus.

3. uh-oh ...
and she (so to speak) has been so for the troops all these years ... oh well ...

(and, as I understand it, she/they has been giving advice like "meet people in church" and "go to your adviser or priest or minister ...")

4. Tradional Christian Morality??
Pedophile Priests. Baptist Ministers who like to fuck little girls while enjoying a tax exempt status. Sunday School Teachers who diddle little boys. TV preachers who lie to gullible "christians" and suck the money right out of their pockets. Placing immense value on ignorance. Enjoying our Army killing non-white non christians on a daily basis. Hating in the name of Jesus Christ.

Damn, I'm with Abby. Fuck "christians" and their "traditional morality."

5. I swear, I am pretty tolerant of people (need to be as a lib in a very red
and rural area) but some people need to be locked up! assholes! and most of them call themselves followers of christ. :eyes:

6. Abby doesn't believe we should torture deviants and non-Christians.
What the hell is wrong with her? The liberal press is destroying this Great Nation.

:sarcasm:

8. I thought Abby died?
The ORIGINAL Abby (I think the one now is a replacement) used to call a colleague of mine here in SoCal for all her pet advice. I think she lived over in Beverly Hills........

9. She's making up for her rightwing aunt Ann Landers.
She's the original Dear Abby's daughter. Dear Abby and Ann Landers were identical twins.

10. They need to leave her alone.
She dispenses good advice most of the time. Being pro gay marriage just makes her all that much better in my view too.

11. In other words, when gays write for relationship advice...
...Abby actually gives them useful advice instead of suggesting that they find Jesus and stop being gay.

This is pretty much what the article says right? I noticed several years ago that the new Abby was talking to gay readers just as she would NORMAL PEOPLE (gasp!) I figured at the time it would provoke some ire among the fundie loons. I'm actually surprised it took this long.

12. "If it feels good, do it."
Isn't that how sex works? I fail to see a problem here.
