Poll question: What is the best way to deal with trolls?

I usually do 1, 2, or 4, or a combo of those.

1. Just try not to feed the trolls.
They thrive on a public spectacle.

2. Combo --- I think you have to give them a chance . . .
sometimes it takes a few rounds for them to show you their deception ---

others, of course, you know immediately.

After that --- ignore.

Play with them.
Get on it. They'll be gone soon enough

12. Big Shoe Dance, baby!
Really though...I find this a tad silly. In my estimation, people who are on the lookout for "trolls" are the same who rely on "ignore" lists.

In other words, do disagreements, even profound philosophical/existential ones, equate to the person one happens to be in disagreement with actually being a "troll?" ...or just someone who perceives things differently from the majority - if you could even define that here at DU - and so seek to label them as trolls as a means of discrediting their stated positions. You'd likely find more of that than you would actual trolling.

17. Well, it's hard to teach the passive aggressive...
...to stop being passive aggressive.

And, it's even harder to teach people what logical fallacies are.

16. Agree!
To call someone a troll who disagrees and offers an alternative is no way to get support for ideas to solve problems.

6. Here's the best way.
Do not publicly accuse another member of this message board of being a disruptor, conservative, Republican, FReeper, or troll, or do not otherwise imply they are not welcome on Democratic Underground. If you think someone is a disruptor, click the "Alert" link below their post to let the moderators know.

Do not draw negative attention to the fact that someone is new, has a low post count, or recently became a member of Democratic Underground. Do not insinuate that because someone is new, they are a troll or disruptor.

Now I know sometimes we get by with bending these rules just a tad but they're a good model to follow.

15. Alert. Ignore is ignorant.
If they are truly a troll, they won't be around long.

If by trolls you mean Obama or Hillary supporters, maybe you should hang out in a forum that is specifically for your candidate.

I like hearing what Everyone says.
