Updated Liberal political action group MoveOn.org began showing a new television ad tying John McCain to President Bush on Wednesday, the five-year anniversary of President Bush’s “Mission accomplished” remark about Iraq.
Another powerful labor organization, the AFL-CIO, rolled out a new, multi-dimensional campaign warning swing-state voters that a McCain presidency would be bad for working class families. The group is sending mailers, handing out fliers to union members at the workplace, and on May 17 will conduct a door-to-door drive against Mr. McCain, the AFL-CIO’s Steve Smith said in an e-mail.
The Republican National Committee is not pleased with either attack, and called on Senator Barack Obama in particular to denounce the ad.
The MoveOn video first will be broadcast in Iowa and New Mexico, states where Senator McCain is running ads unopposed, at a cost of $160,000. The ad is part of what MoveOn said would be a larger $1 million offensive against Mr. McCain.
“Voters need to know Senator McCain would continue President Bush’s failed policies –- in Iraq and elsewhere. A vote for him is basically a vote for a third Bush term.” said Eli Pariser, MoveOn’s executive director, in a news release.
The R.N.C. and Mr. McCain’s campaign demanded that Mr. Obama — no mention of Hillary Rodham Clinton — call for the “smear” to be taken off the airwaves. (MoveOn members have endorsed Senator Obama.)
