Poll question: What is your opinion on Muslims and the Media?
Edited on Fri May-02-08 03:14 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
I often find that posts about Muslims here drop like a stone. I just posted on one media bias against Muslims, and no responses. So I thought maybe a poll would generate better discussion. Thanks for your participation. MSM in the choices refers to "Mainstream Media".

8. Kindly note that it got one vote
The people I talk to face to face seem to think that this is a correct statement. They also think that all Muslims should be deported--until I ask if they really want to get rid of the local heart surgeon and other specialists. Then they sing a different tune.

3. I was tempted to vote 'wish the MSM wouln't report on any religion', but realized that some people
so like to know what is happening within their religious realm.

9. Thank you for your thoughtful post
I put in that option specifically for those who don't like religion so their views would be represented. I admire your generous viewpoint;and one can always ignore the stories on religion if they wish.

4. I really feel bad for Muslims.
Muslims are being stereotyped because of ignorance.

5. I think the coverage of Muslims is
shallow, biased, and mainly aimed at comforting people in their ignorance. Just like they cover everything else, just somewhat worse.

6. I think they know so little about the subject
That they have no idea how to handle it. Doing a story on the good, law abiding, everyday muslim is, to some, giving comfort to the enemy. On the other hand doing a story about some of the more radical customs of Islam is too much like propaganda. Most I think would rather just skip it, easier than becoming informed.

7. While I dislike the way the media has portrayed them
I am not fond of their religion (or of what little I know of it) - but then, I'm not fond of any religion that I know of.

That doesn't mean I'm not fond of them, or wouldn't be. Living as I do in the middle of nowhere in Northern Maine, I have had only brief encounters with Muslims and don't really know any. My biggest issue with their religion is that, much like many Christian religions - it tends to dictate to women and generally place them as beneath men.

I believe it is oppressive, much as I believe many Christian religions are. Yet I like plenty of Christians, regardless of that. I think I'd like plenty of Muslims, if I knew any.

10. Thanks for a thoughtful answer
I would reply that Islam, like Christianity, has many sects. A Catholic woman cannot be a priest, but many Protestant denominations allow women to be ministers. Same thing in Islam. Sufis have many women who are senior teachers and have even headed Orders. I myself am an ordained minister in the Universal Worship. Of the Sunnis I know, the women are very liberated--they are given equal rights to the men. Realize, however, I have interacted with Muslims only within the US. However, that interaction has included Somalis who invited me to their clan rituals. There was segregation of men and women, but the women and men both worked equally on cooking and serving, and the senior teachers were of both sexes.

Most Americans know most about Wahhabism, an extreme sect, because the Saudis are Wahhabis and tend to distribute their versions of the Qur'an, and Wahhabist teachings. Imagine if a person only had a vague notion of Christianity, and only knew about it through the 700 Club, and you begin to understand the problem.

11. Religious adherence is a manifestation of stupidity no matter the spelling of
imaginary deities...but it doesn't necessarily include evil. It usually does, though.

12. I assume you mean this for all believers and not just Muslims
Would you say that the MSM tends to use religion to bring forward agendas that are often at odds with the ideals of a particular faith? The Nazi propaganda against the Jews springs immediately to mind, and we know the outcome of that destructive propaganda.
