email from Cop who helped family of Ducks cross busy HWY
Good Afternoon,

I would like to start this email off by expressing my utmost gratitude for the overwhelming compassionate responses.

During that early Monday morning, I had no idea that a mother and her ducklings would affect so many people in so many different ways. I was just doing what I thought was right and for the safety of a helpless family.

Some say I was doing it for the safety of the citizens, and some say it was for the ducklings. The fact is it was a totality of the circumstances. The family needed to be safe and citizens needed to be able to travel from point A to B safely. By escorting the ducks to a safe place off the roadway, it was a win, win situation. I felt by doing this, I could drive away feeling calm and happy that all were safer. I do not have it in me to just drive by.

When I took this oath of office, it was to protect and defend all humanity and property. I stand by that oath just as majority of our brothers and sisters in uniform do.

Please realize that my actions that day are only a small representation of the compassion and dedication the Lakewood Police Department and other Officers throughout this country that wear the uniform do on a daily basis.

The department has forwarded all emails regarding this incident to me in a prompt manner and they have been very supportive. I have read through every single one and each one has affected me differently. I feel like a “Lucky Duck” to receive such kind responses.

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to express your feelings and sharing the video with others. I hope the video brings more compassion and safety to each other.

Sincerely,

Officer Dustin G. Carrell

Lakewood Police Department

1. Is there more to this story? Like, he did take a bunch of shit from drivers
for slowing them down and interrupting their travel?

Without context, posts like this are rather frustrating.

5. I can't imagine anyone harrassing a cop for that.
But, there are all kinds of people. If anyone gave the policeman shit for that, then I hope it was filmed and will be shown on COPS. If the guy's shirtless, then it would definitely be shown on COPS. :)

But hopefully he got only praise.

6. It took him 3 to 5 mins to get the ducks across the road...
Edited on Fri May-02-08 06:33 PM by and-justice-for-all
If someone cries over that, then they are pretty pathetic IMO.

23. Oh. Three to five minutes to get the duck family off the highway?
I didn't know that.
Okay, I can imagine some people getting impatient....

I am, admittedly, a road-rage queen. But if I had been there, I would have turned off the engine and enjoyed the duck parade.

20. I can
If you watch the tape there are all sorts of a-holes swerving trying to get around the blockade. People during rush hour just act like anyone who is in their way deserves to be run over.

22. Are you kidding?
A few years ago in D.C., there was an accident that happened on I-395 at the start of rush hour in which someone died (I think a motorist waiting for assistance was hit), and the people trying to steer traffic around the body had people yelling and cursing at them because their commute was all fucked up.

14. Well, then. Okay there, Mr. Nasty.
I ask for more of the story, and admit to the frustration of your post seeming to come in in the middle or end of a conversation without any explanation or context, and you go all Dick Cheney on me.

Well, then, so be it. I guess.

I'm sorry you're having such an awful fucking day. Perhaps tomorrow you will be in a better mood, and won't mind answering my question.

21. Absolutely. Absolutely. Because the best way to communicate
Edited on Fri May-02-08 08:14 PM by Rabrrrrrr
is to make the person to whom you are trying to communicate an idea do all the work. It's just in their best interests, really, and keeps them being so fucking lazy as to expect a communicator to just hand them on a silver platter the information the communicator wants them to know.

All the best books on communication will tell you that, as did all the professors and teachers I've ever had in my communications, speaking, and writing classes. "Speak with a minimal amount of information", they'd always say, "And make the other sonofabitch do some goddamned work if he wants to know what you're fucking talking about. And the more obtuse and self-referential you can make your initial information-less communication, the better it is."

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

Because God knows, when one wants to communicate, the last thing one wants to do is provide any actual information. I mean, really, what the hell kind of communication is that? I'm laughing my ass off at the idea that some people might actually expect information in their communication.

Goddamn.

Really, it's how all the best documentaries and classroom lessons work.

3. Thanks for posting that
contrary to what it sometimes seems there are some decent and good police officers. Its nice to see a good one once in a while instead of the usual tazing, beating or someone being bullied.

17. I just sent Officer Carrell an e-mail
People jump all over the police for the mistakes they make. In this instance, not only did he save the duck and her ducklings, he most likely prevented accidents due to people slamming on their brakes so they wouldn't hit the little family.

It's been my experience that yeah, there's some police officers that maybe should think about another line of work, but there are an awful lot who take that whole "protect and defend" thing pretty seriously. I'm lucky enough to know an awful lot of them.
