Bob Herbert makes a great point about race in America
Overkill and Short Shrift

By BOB HERBERT

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is no doubt (and regrettably) a big issue in the presidential campaign. But what we’ve seen over the past week is major media overkill — Jeremiah Wright all day and all night. It’s like watching the clips of a car wreck again and again.

We’ve plotted the trend lines of his relationship with Barack Obama over the past two decades. What did Obama know and when did he know it? We’ve forced Barack and Michelle Obama, two decent, hard-working, law-abiding, family-oriented Americans, to sit for humiliating television interviews, reminiscent of Bill and Hillary Clinton on “60 Minutes” at the height of the Gennifer Flowers scandal.

We’ve allowed the entire political process in what is perhaps the most important election in the U.S. since World War II to become thoroughly warped by the histrionics of a loony preacher from the South Side of Chicago.

There’s something wrong with us.

Race is like pornography in the United States — the dirty stories and dirty pictures that everyone professes to hate but no one can resist. But I suspect that even porn addicts get their fill sometimes.

I think he may be right. Does anyone agree with him ? If so, what can we do to get over it ?

1. I agree with him. The m$m has promoted the dialogue to the
disgust of many. Think about it; while they've spoken of Wright ad nauseum for two weeks, what did they not talk about? You'd think there were no major problems in this country the way they've gone on about this. If we had an honest media, who actually cared about doing decent jobs and telling truths, this wouldn't have happened. But they don't care; they have their agenda and they're sticking to it regardless of how they look or sound. And we all suffer as a result.

2. It's an excellent op-ed piece.
The point he is making about race is that it is a distraction.

I particularly liked his last paragraph:

"Most of the electorate understands that the U.S. is in sorry shape, which is why more than 80 percent of poll respondents say we’re on the wrong track. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright has nothing to do with any of that. The idea that his nonsense may shape the outcome of this election is both tragic and absurd."

3. Bob Herbert rarely misses. A good piece to point sensible people
including independents and conservatives you may know who want to go on and on and on about the reverend wright circle-jerk.

At some point you'd think the corporate media would have some sense of shame, but they ain't hit bottom yet.

4. Totally agree.
When I saw the ad for Abrams' show last night (a one-hour fuck-fest about Obama and Wright), I wanted to throw something at the television.

As to your question, I don't think it's "we" that has to get over it as much as it is the M$M that does. Unfortunately, I don't have any creative ideas for how to do that. Maybe the standard ideas of letter writing, emailing, and calling the M$M outlets would help to pry them away from this non-story story.
