Question from Zogby poll. "It is 3 AM and your telephone rings..."
It is 3 AM and your telephone rings. The next president can't sleep and is calling you for a book recommendation, other than the Bible, what book would you suggest?

My answer: The Federalist Papers.

I was wondering what other DUers might suggest?

19. I'm not. I think it's an important read.
And a sharp lesson to willfully gutless government.

Trust me, both Democratic front runners have already read "The Federalist Papers."

As for McCasket, you don't think he reads, do you?

4. The Constitution. It's short enough to read before you go back to bed,
and you might learn something.

6. How about the Constitution?
Then maybe they would find out just how many laws have been broken by the bush administration and figure out how to get them a speedy trial and a cozy prison cell for a few decades!

22. Good choice
My favorite book. I imagine a movie version with Richard Dreyfus as Doremus Jessup and Marcia Gay Hardin as Lorinda Pike.

11. Tao Te Ching
As for political texts, i'm also keen on The Federalist Papers.

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary."

Leviathan by Hobbes and Democracy in America by Tocqueville are two other "desert island texts" in my view.

15. I wrote in to not look at the bible but read the constitution. That was an odd question.
Most of them were ok, but I almost stopped at that one. I wish they'd get a better proof reader. In the personal info part they asked how many people over 65 were in my household and didn't give me the choice of "none" like they did for the other ages.

16. I did the poll.
I'm presently reading Noam Chomsky's "Reasons of State" about the Vietnam War and that's what I recommended. Every incoming President should read it. Too bad the present one didn't.

17. I answered anything by Chas. Dickins.
Why not? Boz had a great insight into human nature that we could all use. Even a President.
Plus for some reason I've really been into Dickins lately.
