Poll question: So where did you find yourself on the Political Compass?
Edited on Mon May-05-08 05:00 PM by Lorien
You can take the test here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3245235&mesg_id=3245235
or here: http://www.politicalcompass.org/index

http://www.politicalcompass.org/index

*Note that this test was created in the U.K. and uses the terminology in the broader (worldwide) sense, which can sometimes conflict with the rather narrow American definitions of the same words.

23. You would be more left wing than Obama or Clinton on economic policy. That's a good thing.
Keep in mind the political discourse in the US is fairly narrow in scope, usually between center-rightists and far-rightists as far as economic policy goes. On social issues, apparently you're more libertarian than anybody in the presidential contest.

A person with a 0,0 rating would be right on the middle of the graph, right? A pure authoritarian rightist would be somebody with a +10, +10 rating.

34. That's what I meant...
Old automotive reference. If you're adjusting a piston, you want it TDC-top dead center between the walls of the cylinder.

I am as close as you can get to being in the CENTER of that graph without being there--which gets crap flung at me from all sides. Too "lib-rul" for the right, too "fascist-y" for the left.

I wonder where Clinton and Obama would fall if they were able to answer the questions honestly and anonymously, instead of in the public forum, where all candidates never really answer questions honestly, instead they pander and flipflop for votes.

It's making you grow more dissatisfied with the current order of things, so you move leftward in reaction. If you scroll up for my graph, you can plainly see I'm pretty far left, and I wasn't always that far left, but the last 8 years really pushed me out there.

61. What I can't stomach is this:
Why do so many Democrats vote against their own positions WHEN THEY HAVE THE CHANCE?

It's one thing to be stuck with the lesser of two evils in November.

It's another to be presented with an array of real progressive choices, reject them, and actively put that lesser of two evils on the ballot in November.

Many Democratic voters don't seem to walk their talk.

63. I think that the media and those that control it
really do pick our candidates for us. By not giving them equal time and by spinning the entire race ("Kucinich is a nutty fringe candidate who won't eat meat and has a hot wife"! while Obama is "Poised, inspirational and destined for greatness"!) they set up a sense of inevitability about the whole thing. I had one friend it California tell me that she preferred Edwards but voted for Obama just to stop Hillary "Because Edwards doesn't have a chance anyway". She watches a lot of TV, so it was no surprise that she felt this way. True election reform might change this, but at this point I can't ever see that happening.

64. I think you're right.
We've seen it happen to DK, and we understand that tptb have a big interest in keeping people like him on the fringe.

Edwards, though, is a lot more mainstream. They had a lot more trouble squelching support for him, yet it still happened.

When DK dropped out, I naturally gravitated to Edwards. I thought he'd done a great job with his campaign so far, and I liked the "new," more progressive Edwards better than when he ran in '04. I didn't get to support him for very long, though, before he was gone, too. :(

Putting anarchism on the same axis as libertarianism is bullshit. Anarchism is a variety of socialism. The premise of this 'compass' is out to lunch. Bet the author never read Bakunin.

73. I don't see Anarchism on the graph or the test...
so I don't see where you read that from the test. A couple of things, the Libertarian section of the graph(bottom half) is for CIVIL libertarian, not economic libertarian, which would be libertarian-right. Being a civil libertarian simply means you want as little interference from the government into people's personal lives as possible. Being pro-choice, pro-civil rights, etc. would make you a civil libertarian.

Besides that Anarcho-Capitalists(the most extreme of Libertarian-rightists) would dispute the notion that Anarchism itself is socialist in nature. It started that way, but it doesn't necessary have to be that way.

74. Point taken on civil libertarians

Anarchism is right above libertarian in lighter print.

To be sure the word has been appropriated by goofballs like von Mises in a vain attempt to oppose socialism but all they do is reverse engineer their way to a superficially acceptable excuse for greed and class. Had to give Bakunin a few spins in the dirt.

83. In the UK, where I believe this test originated...
there is no Libertarian party, and 'libertarian' generally refers to civil liberties. Economic libertarianism is more often called 'laissez-faire economics' here - not quite sure why we say it in French; but anyway 'libertarian' doesn't have the baggage here that it does in America.

85. See post #44 for a definition of Libertarianism
you are quite right, of course. Many people here have a very narrow view of the term because of the rather extreme wackiness of the Libertarian party.

I always thought I was pretty moderate. Actually, I wonder where most Americans would be if they took this test. A damn site further to the left and south than the politicians.
