I don't have any links, but I just saw this on the news.
Gotta story to tell.
A couple went to get married. The husband wanted to take his wife's last name. He doesn't have a close relationship w/ his family and wanted to take his wife's last name since he was closer to his in laws.
They were denied!
He would have had to go through the whole costly and long process of changing his name.
The ACLU took up the case and they WON!!!
The state of California now will allow couples the option to take the wife's last name.
Now if we can just get us gays married!
Anywho .... this is great and I'm proud of these two for fighting!!
It reminded me of what I went through when I wanted to give my children hyphenated last names (in the deep south). They initially refused but gave in when I refused to sign the birth certificates.
I hope it is another step towards letting people making decisions about their most personal relationships.
I want to hyphenate my name. For longest time I thought I would drop my last name and take my husband's name. But I grew closer to my dad after a long separation and don't want to lose my name. I think in time I will. My SIL would LOVE it if I did. But I don't want to at this point.
The problem is that my SO's name is Michael same as my late brother. It would be weird to have him named Michael Marshall-Selby and I don't want to lose my ronnykmarshall name.
I think in time I'll be ronnykselby-marshall.
I'm already listed in the phone book as Ronny Selby since the phone company would charge for an additional listing.
