Iraq al-Qaeda chief jail mystery

A prominent Cairo lawyer says the Egyptian man identified by the US as the new al-Qaeda leader in Iraq has been in jail in Egypt for seven years.

The lawyer, Mamdouh Ismail, who has represented Egyptian Islamists for many years, says he met the man days ago in a jail on the edge of Cairo.

He says the apparent contradictions in information may be part of a disinformation campaign by both sides.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader 'killed'

The interior ministry in Iraq says it has received intelligence that the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq has been killed in an "internal battle" between militants.

Abu Ayyub al-Masri has led the group since June 2006, when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in an air strike.

One official said he was "100% sure" Masri was dead, but another urged caution as they do not have the body.

Al-Qaeda Iraq leader 'arrested'

The leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, has been arrested, according to media reports quoting the country's defence ministry.

Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, was detained in the northern city of Mosul, reports said.

The US military in Iraq said it was currently looking into the reports.

The Egyptian-born militant took over the leadership of the group from Abu Musab al-Zarqawi shortly after he was killed in a US air strike in June 2006.

I agree with the above post of this is how the corporate media is used in pretending that there is "progress" in this quagmire by creating and destroying "boggie men" that all we know about have beards and have strange names. It doesn't matter if the person is real or not...it just sounds good when we "get" one of 'em. And with little independent journalism coming out of that country, there is little to refute the propaganda the Pentagon and this regime will dish out...especially if its felt that they can spin it to help Gramps get elected. Remember, that Zarquawi fiasco lasted throughout most of the 2004 campaign and it was in the last months that we was "killed"...the pictures were strewn all over the corporate media and people were bullshitted into thinking this regime was getting the "bad guys". Four years later and the same crooks are trying to full the same shit...and we still have a corporate media that all but rolls over to curry favor.

And you know what? No one is going to hear about this through our media. Hell, there was a hearing two days ago in the House where people testifying said that Bush and Co were war criminals. Nada coverage.
