May 10 is the nation's largest single-day food drive with our friends at the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Letter carriers, with help from their sisters and brothers in the other postal crafts and thousands of other volunteers, will stage a blitz on Saturday, May 10, to combat hunger in America, conducting NALC’s annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive in every U.S. state and jurisdiction.
The drive, in its 16th year, is the largest one-day food collection in the nation and the biggest community service effort by any union affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
On the day before Mother’s Day this year, letter carriers will focus their efforts on restocking the community food banks, pantries and shelters that millions of American families will rely on throughout the summer.
More.....To participate, leave food donations by your mailboxes on Saturday, May 10th.
Your letter carrier will pick them up and bring them to your local food pantry! On Friday, the second-to-last day of The Early Show's twelve-day food drive, came word that the show had raised nearly $1.5 million in corporate donations alone for America's Second Harvest. Also Friday, Wal-Mart announced on the show that it was donating $500,000 to the America's Second Harvest Backpack Program, which gives food on weekends and other days off from school to kids who rely on free or reduced-price school lunches. On Thursday, the :redbox: ConAgra Foods Foundation issued a "challenge grant" to America's Second Harvest and will be matching individual gifts made to the organization through the end of the month, up to $250,000. :redbox: That equates to 5 million pounds of food, or 4 million meals for hungry children in the U.S. The matching grant doubles the impact and enables America's Second Harvest to feed more than 30,000 kids in need with three meals each day for the entire, 12-week summer. Donations can be made by going to the Second Harvest Web site.On Wednesday, Kraft donated more than 75,000 pounds of food valued at more than $100,000 -- enough food to fill two giant trucks. Kraft also presented a check for $250,000, bring the grand total of its contribution to $350,000.On Tuesday, Pampered Chef donated $100,000, and The Snack Factory gave $25,000 worth of its gourmet snack Pretzel Crisps. On Monday, Sweet Leaf Tea donated more than than 12,000 bottles of its all-natural ice teas and lemonades, worth $20,000.
