Harlan County, USA
I just watched this movie on IFC. I cried so much and am now a stronger supporter of unions.

Holly Hunter stared in the TV movie.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209013/

A Kentucky woman whose mine-worker husband is nearly killed in a cave-in, and whose father is slowly dying of black lung disease, joins the picket lines for a long, violent strike.

We rented it from Netflix. Netflix has BOTH the TV movie and the documentary if you missed it.

2. I grew up in a neighbor county to Harlan County..
Bloody Harlan. The only other fame for Harlan County is the Montgomery Clift character in "From Here to Eternity" who was from Harlan County, KY...

3. My Mum is from Hyden. Both Grandpas were coal miners.
I've traveled around the world, and Hyden and its hollers are still one of my favorite places on earth.

4. How strange is this? I was at a friend's house and he had the TV on, now I haven't watched any
television for a long time, so I'm used to not knowing what most people talk about most of the time, but there were a whole string, maybe 4 in a row, of anti-union commercials that played while I was there.

As I understand it, less than 10% of American workers have any representation anymore, so what reason does this organization have for buying all this, very expensive, air-time to bad-mouth organizations that have, at best, an infinitesimal effect? Not to mention the fact that the few remaining unions are run by an "executive class" that are more than happy to serve as gatekeepers for the ruling class against the interests of their membership.

6. I watched it this morning on IFC....really a fascinating look back on our history.
Big Coal is no better than Big Oil. A ruthless corporate mindset. Looking back on Yablonsky's murder, I think the same people who offed the Kennedy's and King were in on his murder, too.
