Another N. Texas city to start fighting "illegal humans"

Carrollton's new mayor says top priority is ridding city of illegal immigrants

05:15 AM CDT on Monday, May 12, 2008

By STEPHANIE SANDOVAL / The Dallas Morning News
ssandoval@dallasnews.com

Look for the fight against illegal immigration to intensify in Dallas' northwest suburbs.

Carrollton's next mayor, Ron Branson, said Sunday that he'll begin working immediately to rid the city of illegal immigrants.

His come-from-behind election victory Saturday night coincided with the expected mayoral win in neighboring Farmers Branch by a better-known activist on the same issue: Tim O'Hare.

"Illegal immigration has got to be at the top," Mr. Branson said. "Every place I went, people wanted to talk about that."

He said he will create a citizens committee to come up with ideas for driving out illegal immigrants.

1. A "citizens committee"?
I remember the "White Citizens Councils" from the segregation years. They were just another face of the KKK. I suspect that the concept is being resurrected.

Spanish language advertising in store windows lowers his property value.

3. Let those 'burbanites have to actually mow their own lawns in July and August ..
Let 'em have to do laps with the old Snapper in the 104-degree sauna that is north Texas in the summer. Then they will be petitioning the mayor to allow the Mow & Blow crews back into Carrollton.

Don't you know that putting word into someone else's mouth or misquoting someone is a perfectly acceptable practice. Otherwise, how would you enrage the troops.:sarcasm:

8. You've heard it every time someone uses "illegal" as a noun
to describe human beings.

I know, those who use it aren't necessarily racist. But many unknowingly perpetuate racism by using that term to describe actual people.

11. I think that grew out of the dislike of the term illegal alien
Edited on Mon May-12-08 01:26 PM by marshall
Back in the day when Phil Collins was recording "It's no fun being an illegal alien", that was the term used. Then it was considered pejorative and the term illegal immigrant took its place. I think some confused people didn't know what term to use, so they just say illegal. Now the term is undocumented immigrants, and I suppose using the same logic society will shorten it to "undocumenteds" before long.

But I do agree with your premise that using the term illegal as a noun denotes a general illegality that might not accurately define them. In the same vein some religious types are avoiding the use of homosexual as a noun, preferring to use the term homosexual acts.

12. Well, any explanation that can put the blame on Phil Collins can't be all bad!
(Just kidding, Phil.)

6. Who's going to do the hard work?
the RW scum hate the idea of paying a decent wage to citizens with rights, but have no qualms about hiring illegal immigrants. What wrong with this picture?

10. I read the whole article and there was no mention
of the phrase "illegal humans". You may disagree with what he's doing, but you shouldn't put words in his mouth and use that to attack him.

And what's wrong with the phrase 'illegal immigrant'? Immigrant: any person that moves to a new country. Illegal: running contrary to the existing rules.

Is any part of that inaccurate when describing people who move to a new country (the US in this case) in a way that violates US law?

14. the real intent is to create a modern-day sundown town...
Notice that the focus is on keeping illegal aliens from occupying homes in their town -- not on enforcing employment laws.

The message is, you can still come in to do our yardwork and wash our dishes. But you can't live here. Your ass is gone by sundown, or else.

The people in these suburbs still want their cheap and illegal labor. They're not "fighting illegal immigration". They just don't want to live nextdoor to their helots. It's a very old story.
