Rachel Maddow 'gunning' for own show
Please, MSNBC, make it so!

http://www.politico.com/blogs/michaelcalderone/0508/Rachel_Maddow_gunning_for_own_show.html

Rachel Maddow, who's been sparring on set with Pat Buchanan throughout this election for MSNBC, told NPR's "On the Media" that she's hoping to get her own cable show.

Maddow, who already hosts a radio show on Air America, has been critical of her fellow pundits discussing issues she doesn't see as important--like Rev. Wright--over and over.

She tells host Bob Garfield:

The real issue is story selection, is editorial control. I can only control what it is that I get asked to speak about in a very blunt way. That said, the way that I handle that is that I, I am gunning to get my own show. I would really like to be hosting a show on cable television, rather than guesting because I would like to exert more control over what gets discussed, over what counts as important.

12. I agree with you on AA, but there's really no reason she couldn't do both.
Lou Dobbs has a 3 hr radio show of his own & his own show on CNN. I understand that O'Reiley dies as well, though I've never heard it nor would I ever listen. The 1st hr of Rachel's show is a simulcast of her appearance on MSNBC already, so apparently they've worked ourt some kind of agreement. I'm positive it could be done where should have 2 or 3 hrs on AA and later do 1 hr on MSNBC...MAYBE to replace tweety's second hour????

19. I don't like the simulcast of "Race for the White House"
I prefer all 3 hours of Rachel; or, 2 hours with David Bender during the 3rd hour taking calls. But Gregory's show is very annoying and I don't really like Rachel's appearances on that show.

20. I didn't mean that AA should simulcast a show Rachel MIGHT get on
cable. I meant that she could do BOTH radio & TV as separate appearances. 2-3 hrs on AA & 1 he on cable. The only reason I mentioned the simulcast was to point out that AA & MSNBC appear to already have an agreement to share her talents, and I would think something like that would have to exist for her to work for BOTH at the same time.

I agree with you about David's show. I always liked him when he was a reporter, but so far he hasn't been very impressive on TV. I usually tune into Race for the WH only to listen to Rachel, and then tune into her radio show on line after the TV show is over.

Rachel may not have the freedom she thinks she will have.

After all, KO exited over Monica Lewinsky.

but he refuses to do anything. Run your show the way you want, Keith. I'd like to see them try and fire him. CNN (or even Fox -maybe some alternate reality Fox) would hire him in a flash.

There's mutual respect there, and it shows.

39. I think he has already made some changes for the better
The last segment always used to be Brittany-type crap. Now it's much more likely to be about politics or something substantial. A vast improvement, and not just because Brittany is in seclusion. There are lots more entertainment types out there, but Keith mostly gets to ignore them.

40. He still claims a lot of the "#1" stories are put up there by his producer(s)
In this primary season, I think his show has been much more balanced toward the serious stuff than the garbage. A year or two ago I think his show was bulking up on the fluff, but we're lucky it's going the other way now.

She'd be terrific. We really enjoy her contributions to other MSNBC shows. When Tucker's show was booted, there was a rumor she'd replace him and we were very disappointed to learn it wasn't true.

Randi Rhodes was very complimentary of Rachel Maddow last week -- said she ought to cut her teeth on cable but replace Katie Couric on CBS.

14. No, no a thousand times no. Not network. CBS would completely control her message.
Cable maybe. I still think she will be disappointed at how little freedom they would give her on her own show. Let's not forget that these media's are owned and controlled by the corporatists. They may tolerate a little give and take but that's all.

Rachel's discussed her desire to have her own show on the "television machine" for some time now.

16. Get rid of David Gregory's piece of SHIT show...
"Race to the Whitehouse" is the worst television show out there.. Gregory must have sold his soul to get the gig, because he has sold out his independent journalist mantra in favor of Big Repug. He makes me sick. Maddow should have gotten that timeslot in the first place... I wonder if her orientation played a part in her not getting the gig.

Edited on Tue May-13-08 12:38 PM by BlueCaliDem04
... during some 'roast' or something. I guess it was then when *NBC decided he could be a credible "independent voice" like Olbermann since very few even saw that disgusting clip.

Rachel's got MY vote. The only reason why I watch "Race to the Whitehouse" is because of her.

Edited to replace "CBS" with "NBC".

After Thom Hartmann, Rachel Maddow is my favorite Progressive Talker. She is whip smart, and funny as "all get out!"

I love the way she talks circles around light-weights like Sean Hannity, and the way she puts blow-hards like Pat Buchanan in his place.

And, Keith Olbermann does beam every time they talk on Countdown. I don't think its "pride" at having "created" her. I get the sense that he genuinely admires her for her keen intellect. I know I do.

I loved the "Rachel Maddow's Campaign Asylum," and I'd watch her TV show "in a New York minute!"
