Harriett Miers says her clash with Congress will outlast Bush
By Max B. Baker | Fort Worth Star-Telegram

* Posted on Tuesday, May 13, 2008

FORT WORTH, Texas — Former White House Counsel Harriet Miers predicted that her constitutional clash with Congress over executive privilege and the separation of powers doctrine may not be settled until after President Bush leaves office next year.

Miers, a former U.S. Supreme Court nominee, was sued and cited for contempt by the Democratic-controlled Congress earlier this year for declining to talk about her role in the firings of U.S. attorneys while serving the Bush administration.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if it extended beyond this administration,” Miers said following her speech Tuesday at a Tarrant County Bar Association luncheon celebrating Law Day. But it also could be settled at any time “with the agreement of the parties,” she said.

“All sides had hoped, I suspect, that it would be resolved by accommodation. That hasn’t happened. Now it’s in the hands of the judiciary, which is the way the system works,” Miers said. “It’s an opportunity to see the Constitution actually function and work.”:wow:

1. Can't WAIT for these hearings ...
They'll be better than what would have been her hearings for SCOTUS.

11. I hope the GOP doesn't divert, but...
...if they do, I hope we can keep the pressure on the GOP-controlled media.

lied under oath over and over. Off to the orange jump suit Harriet. What law school did she attend? She is a traitor and Neo Con. Her own self interest was to lie for Presidential power, profiteering, and robbery.

5. Think of the current Supreme Court and ask that question again.
Sad to say, she might just get away with it.

7. They make their own laws and rules.
The Executive branch of government Harriet does not do that. The Congress does that since they are elected by the people to do it. That's History from High School about our government. That my dear is separation of powers. No Georgie is not king.

6. With the current federalist-leaning SCOTUS?
Yeah, I bet she can't wait for this fight to prove to us all how the Constitution "functions and works" when the court is stacked with cronies.

9. That's what I was thinking, but I got educated upthread.
Of course I know about separation of powers, but does King KKKarl and Prince George?

13. I'm not so optimistic as mac2
The 2000 selection was a turning point, and Bush** has had seven years to make his own additions. The most glaring example: Roberts was a notorious Federalist with little bench experience yet he was still nominated and approved to Chief Justice. That still strikes a very dissonant chord with me.

It seems obvious to me, just by what's happened in the Judicial branch under Bush** (never mind the rest), that the SCOTUS can most certainly be brought to heel by the right...and probably has been.

But that's just my cynical opinion.

14. Hope you don't mind if I share your cynical opinion.
Just from the jaw-dropping decisions of the last year, I think even SCOTUS has been corrupted--but hopefully, not irretrievably.

8. Goodness, she's got some rocks,
doesn't she? Just another arrogant Bullshist from this story. Completely whacked out broad. She pales in comparison with Condi, but I think we could put her up in the top 5 bitches of the administration. Of course she's no Coulter, but then, that harridan goes beyond the pale.
