PJ O’Rourke-"Electing Dems" Like "Marrying Angelina Jolie For Her Brains"
Edited on Fri May-16-08 11:03 AM by kpete
Quote of the Day
May 16th, 2008 by Steve O

Two substantive political issues are the federal budget deficit and the war in Iraq. Now, if you’re electing Democrats to control government spending, then you’re marrying Angelina Jolie for her brains. This leaves the Democrats with one real issue: Iraq. And so far the best that any Democratic presidential candidate has been able to manage with Iraq is to make what I think of as the high school sex promise: I will pull out in time, honest dear.”

- PJ O’Rourke.

5. Touche!
Angelina Jolie seems like she's a very intelligent lady and she's talented, beautiful and incredibly fortunate to be with Brad Pitt and have such a wonderful family!

P.J.'s just jealous.

3. Reading things like this
makes me really ashamed that when I was in journalism school, I hailed P.J. as the second coming of Hunter.
Now I shouldn't even mention them in the same sentence.
Ah, I was a dumb (hopelessly ill-informed) college kid.

52. Yeah, what a disappointment
I read him back in the mid-1970s in National Lampoon. Now, he seems determined to fill the bar stool of Christopher Hitchens once Hitchens' liver finally flees his body. O'Rourke's writing never really matured, and is the equivalent of "Isn't this clever?" The proper rejoinder used to be, "Yes, I thought you'd think it was clever." Now, I don't know what to say, except to sigh and turn to something more interesting. Like watching that new coat of whitewash dry on the outhouse.

4. Listening to PJ O'Rourke for political commentary is like...
going to a strip club for the salad bar. The talentless asshole has never been funny and he has even less to offer in terms of politics. How incredibly awkward is it to watch him on Real Time with Bill Maher doing his damnedest to play his "See, republicans can be 'hip' too" game. Epic fail, PJ.

40. PJ is actually one of my deepest disappointments...
I really enjoyed his writing for Rolling Stone in the early 90's. Worked for National Lampoon before that, and took over for Hunter S. Thompson at RS. Clever, acerbic, and funny. Kind of a Bill Maher-type of writer's voice, but more libertarian. A real mish-mash of views. Bought a few of his books.

Then, I dunno WTF happened to him. He took a hard right, really started cranking up the self-satisfied snark and the anti-left dialogue, and he was never the same. Couldn't stomach reading him anymore.

I guess he reminds me of a time, not too long ago, when one could read a moderate right-leaning book and walk away with some insight. Now the dialogue's so divisive and corrosive, I'd just throw one of his books across the room.

Yeah, I'm that old.

16. Simile Sap strikes again
This reminds me of that nefarious grade lowerer who causes so much damage to confused high school students -- the Simile Sap. Not content to just mix metaphors, Simile Sap picks out the wrong attribute and hangs his logic out to dry:

"Did you hear that guy defending evolution? He must be as smart as Einstein."
--"Well yes, Sap, that 'guy' is Richard Dawkins...... and he is in the same class as Einstein."
"D'ohh!"

If P.J. wants the Simile Sap to spice up his writing, there's no lack of material. Look at the Iraq War Resolution.

to fund their illegal immoral wars based on lies??? And who has been robbing the Social Security Trust for the last 8 years? Wasn't it Rumsfeld that said the pentagon lost track of 2 trillion dollars on 9/10/01?? The Dems are the ones that hired KBR and other contractors to rip us off with their cost plus tactics? The Dems are responsible for the "missing billions" in Iraq? And whose idea was it to spend so much money investigation Clinton. but then couldn't spend any money investigating 9/11? Someone has been wasting money on wrong priorities and in isn't the Dems.

And he should leave Angelina out of it because she clearly has more respect than he does.

"Putting Words in the President's Mouth
Sixteen obvious points that George W. Bush should make during the Wednesday night debate.
by P.J. O'Rourke
10/12/2004 12:00:00 AM

(2) There are two organizations pushing for change in November--al Qaeda and the Democratic party. And they both have the same message: "We're going to fix you, America." On the whole, the terrorists have a more straightforward plan for fixing things. They're going to blow themselves up. Although, come to think of it, Howard Dean did that.

>>snip<<

(4) Speaking of jobs, Senator, how come every illegal immigrant who wades the Rio is able to find one in about 10 minutes? Meanwhile, your Democratic core constituency has been unemployed for years. Are your supporters lazy, Senator Kerry? Or are they stupid? Back when Clinton was president, did your supporters think they got their jobs at Burger King because Bill was sleeping with the cow?

(5) You say health care costs are soaring? Well, I'm not the one with a personal injury lawyer on my ticket. I loved the billboards that John Edwards used to have all over North Carolina: "Y'ALL MIGHT HAVE GOT HURT AT WORK AND NOT EVEN KNOWN IT" and "FEELIN' POORLY? LEMME SUE YER DOCTOR!"

(6) Yeah, we're running a deficit. Like Democrats never did that. But at least we're borrowing the money when interest rates are low. It's the same as refinancing your home loan. Not that you'd know, Senator Kerry, since your rich wife paid off your mortgage.

>>snip<<

(8) No, it turns out Saddam Hussein didn't have weapons of mass destruction. And how crazy does that make Saddam? All he had to do was tell Hans Blix, "Look anywhere you want. Look under the bed. Look beneath the couch. Look behind the toilet tank in the third presidential palace on the left, but keep your mitts off my copies of Maxim." And Saddam could have gone on dictatoring away until Donald Rumsfeld gets elected head of the World Council of Churches. But no . . ."

60. So, what the hell do your motivations matter if the end result is that you're married to Angelina
Jolie?

It seems to me that the overriding rationale for the right (wrong) wing is that their intentions are "good".

Sorry, no. What counts is your actions and what results from your actions.

The right wing wants you to buy into the idea that "the ends justify the means". All human beings of conscience must reject this false premise.
