Veterans Tell Conyers "Impeach Bush"

Veterans' Group Seeks to Deliver 10,000 Impeachment Signatures To House Judiciary Committee Chair, Rep. John Conyers

WASHINGTON, DC - May 16 - A national veterans' organization today sent a letter to Representative John Conyers, head of the House Judiciary Committee, requesting a meeting with him to deliver over 10,000 signatures on a petition to impeach George W. Bush. Impeachment hearings would have to be convened by the Michigan Democrat.

The president of Veterans For Peace, Elliott Adams, wrote Conyers requesting a meeting in early June to deliver their petitions. In it, he pointed out that by invading and occupying Iraq, the Bush administration has violated the U.S. Constitution, domestic laws and international treaties.

Adams' letter said, "Having taken an oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic, our members take…the obligation to impeach George W. Bush most seriously...we must hold this administration accountable for waging a war of aggression against Iraq."

The former paratrooper and Viet Nam combat vet reminded the 21-term Representative from Detroit that, "You have taken the same oath, Congressman Conyers, and we expect you will hold it just as sacred as we do and begin impeachment hearings at the soonest possible moment."

Adams concluded his request by writing, "Congressman Conyers, you have stood on the side of justice in battles too numerous to mention during your long career in the House. Will you one day go into retirement with a shadow over your entire record because you did not do everything possible to hold this criminal administration accountable? We genuinely hope not."

###

Veterans For Peace was founded in 1985 and includes veterans of all eras and wars from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), World War II, the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf and current Iraq wars as well as other conflicts cold or hot. It has participated in every major demonstration against the war in Iraq. Our collective experience tells us wars are easy to start and hard to stop and that those hurt are often the innocent. VFP is represented at the UN as an official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

11. I have lately started to worry about pardons
Is the right to pardon others suspended while a prez or vice prez is under investigation for impeachment? If not, I wouldn't put it past the sleazebags to pardon every last top-level person in their administration, in advance.

5. Military Commissions Act is illegal
Hi.. new poster here. One of the things I think they (and others) can be impeached, and imprisoned, w.r.t is the Military Commissions Act of 2006. What they are doing at Guantanamo is illegal. Here is why:

There is a federal civil rights law called Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law (18 USC 242). It makes it a crime to deprive someone of their rights or subject them to different punishments based on a law/regulation/etc simply on account of them being, among other things (i.e. race), an alien. Essentially you can't use a law to take someone's rights away because they are an alien.

The MCA states, in many places, that it applies to "alien unlawful enemy combatants." Note that that means it is specific to aliens. And we all know what the MCA does: takes away the right to habaeus corpus, the right to apply Geneva Conventions, and more. The MCA is specific to aliens, in fact legal scholar Robert Levy, of the conservative think tank the Cato Institute, argues just that: that citizens would have habeas corpus rights, while aliens would not.

Seems to me the application of the MCA is a criminal violation of 18 USC 242, depriving aliens of their rights and subjecting them to different punishments.

And this is not a constitutional challenge, not a matter of a lawsuit saying the MCA is unconstitutional to be brought up before the Supreme Court. It is federal law, something the FBI investigates.

In fact, in certain circumstances, likely those found at Guantanamo Bay--involving sexual abuse, murder, kidnapping--this is a capital crime. We're not talking a year in jail, violation of this law in those circumstances is punishable by death.

And make no mistake DC Dem Ditherers. This failure to impeach is losing the election to McCain. It wreaks weakness. And Friedman has already exposed the plan to trumpet "strong and wrong" as better than "weak and right" out of the Mighty Euphemedia Wurlitzer.

If Hillabama were going to cut it, we'd see that in polls by now. It's not there and not coming. It's impeachment or uninterupted bushcheneyism (yes, really -- or are you under the delusion that cheney needs his stinking "I'm the veep" badge to pull McCain's puppet strings?)
