To the people of Iraq,
Our government has been at war with your country for 5 years now over what turns out to be bad intelligence at best, at worst a lie. Our people, and yours, have suffered a tremendous loss because of this war. And there was NO need for it.
Regardless of how we saw you living your life under saddam we still had no business invading your country, killing thousands of people (men, women, children) and blowing up your homes, etc.
Be assured that we, the American people, did not and do not want this to continue. We just want to live our little lives for the short time we have here and try to enjoy it, just like you do.
The actions of our government has caused more deaths than 9/11 to our own people, not to mention the wounded - both physically and psychologically. And we have killed more people there in Iraq than many 9/11's here - people who posed NO threat to us at all.
What our government won't say, but I will, is that I am sorry for this.
What is done is done, and I know many of our troops (not all as you have seen) are good people doing what their leaders told them to do.
But that does not make it right.
I hope you will not judge us all based on the actions of the few here. There were, and are, many who have been against this war.
It may seem to you that we live in a near dictatorship, where both parties vote for and fund a war that we are against. We the people have voted for change. We have yet to see it though.
So I guess we cannot bitch at you for leaving saddam in power now can we?
In our country we pretend to be free and have a government by and for the people. That delusion helps us get by each day I guess. But there are many here that know the truth and are working for change.
Each day there are more laws passed restricting freedoms, and more and more we are treated as the enemy. Much like what you had to endure under saddam.
I think, overall, we the people just want to get along with you and your people. And screw our worthless leaders.
Someday, I hope you and I can be friends. Someday, I hope we both can live our lives without all these power hungry people in power who want to wage wars all the damn time.
Someday I hope I can shake your hand and sit down with a cold beer and wonder together why the hell we all put up with it.
Someday.
