Oprah-fuelled insanity; symptomatic of a sick society.

Found this little clip of a recent Oprah show. Not just any show, but one of her "Oprah's favorite things" episodes, where she apparently gives away some pretty good stuff to everyone in the audience.

Initially, I found the audience freak-outs to be humorous, like grown women channelling their inner teeny-bopper. Then I realized the ecstasy displayed is merely that of a consumption-centered drone being given free "stuff". It left me feeling rather depressed.

3. If they only gave out tee shirts and tote bags, like they do on PBS,
this fund raising thing would be over by now! Never underestimate the power of a $100 coffee mug.

4. Welcome to the Charismatic Church of Consumerism
While not a member when it comes to spending MY money, I'd become a tithe(tax)-paying member if it got me a free car!

5. I remember hearing something about
the audience for those special shows being "nominated" to attend. They are usually "angels" of some sort or people caring for invalid relatives and they never get a break.

But yes, it is a massive product promotion.

6. That could be. I was thinking they might also be screened for their "enthusiasm",
like they must do on the Price is Right. "Come on down", but first do a crazy arm-flapping, foot-stomping dance.
