Colorado Democrats nominate Udall to run for Senate

http://www.myfoxcolorado.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=6566469&version=4&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1

Rep. Mark Udall secured the Colorado Democratic Party's nomination as expected on Saturday at the party's convention in Colorado Springs, for which some 10,000 people poured into the Republican Party stronghold of Colorado Springs.

Udall, (D-Eldorado Springs), is seeking to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime feeling, exciting...There's a lot of spirit in this hall," Udall said after accepting the nomination. "Delegates here understand we've got to work together, to drive a new energy economy.

They also added another super delegate for Obama

In addition to the nomination of Udall, conventioneers had to select the 12 final delegates and two alternates to the national convention, and also made official the selection of former Denver mayor - and Obama supporter - Federidco Pena, as the 15th and final super-delegate for Colorado.

"Every delegate count is important for the national convention in August," said Pena. "We're fighting for every delegate. This has always been about delegates. That's what this primary campaign has been about, so my election this afternoon is important. It adds another one to the column."

Numerous Clinton supprters at the convention expressed uncertainty, still, that they would be able to cast a vote for Obama in November, should he secure the party's nomination, as is currently expected.

2. This election is already over. Congrats to Senator Udall.
The R candidate, Bob Schaffer, is associated with Jack Abramoff!!

The Corrupt Bastards Club still has lots of holes to fill in their sinking flagship, the Republican Party
Schaffer seems more like a heavy anchor now, than a viable candidate. He has Abramoff written all over himself!

Abramoff ties cloud Schaffer's '99 fact-finding trip
Bob Schaffer's campaign says the ex-lobbyist didn't sway a look at factories in the Mariana Islands.
By Michael Riley - Denver Post - 04/10/2008 - http://www.denverpost.com/newsheadlines/ci_8872607

Just before boarding a plane to the Mariana Islands in 1999, then-Congressman Bob Schaffer announced he was embarking on a fact-finding mission to get to the bottom of repeated allegations of labor abuse in the American protectorate.

..... What he didn't say was that the trip was partly arranged by the firm of now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who represented textile factory owners fighting congressional efforts to reform labor and immigration laws on the islands and who was being handsomely paid to keep the islands' cherished exemptions.

Schaffer and his wife stayed for free at a palm-studded beach resort ........

..... the Republican candidate for Colorado's open Senate seat described the protectorate's guest-worker program as a "model" lawmakers could use as they overhaul the U.S. immigration system. ....

Schaffer 'disgusted' with articles exploring lobbyist link
By Nancy Lofholm - Denver Post - 04/11/2008 - http://www.denverpost.com/nationalpolitics/ci_8894599

GRAND JUNCTION — Senate candidate Bob Schaffer brushed off questions today ... during a press conference following Cheney's visit about Denver Post reports that link him to an effort by jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff to quash labor reform in the Mariana Islands .... Schaffer ... described the protectorate's guest-worker rules as a "model" for the U.S. immigration system.

Schaffer was visibly angry. "I am really disgusted with the tone and tenor and direction of The Denver Post stories. I have had no contact with the individuals in the story, particularly Jack Abramoff," Schaffer said. "It's a matter of fiction. That's all I'm going to say about it."

After deflecting one question ... Schaffer turned back to ... a private conversation he had with Cheney, Cheney told him he was impressed with the growth and construction he saw from the window of his limousine ....

Protesters lined part of the Vice President's route waving signs and holding out hands painted red to symbolize Cheney's part in the Iraq War ....

Alan Franklin: Marianas questions dog Bob Schaffer

Marianas questions dog Bob Schaffer
By Alan Franklin - Apr 8th, 2008 - http://www.progressnowaction.org/page/community/post/al/Cqfb

.... Schaffer expressed support for a "guest-worker" program of some description, and acknowledged the impossibility of simply deporting millions of people from the United States. So far so good.

Then Schaffer makes a truly breathtaking and unexpected statement:

"He pointed to the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. protectorate that imports tens of thousands of foreign textile workers, as a successful model for a guest-worker program that could be adapted nationally. ...."

.... Here's what we know about Schaffer's involvement in the CNMI scandal:

In August of 1999, the Denver Post reported then-Rep. Schaffer took a trip to Saipan (capital of the Northern Marianas Territory) to "investigate" reports of labor abuses ....

After Schaffer's "Mt. Macaca" Moment, Democrats Send GOP Candidate A Geography Quiz
2008-05-15
Matthew Miller, DSCC
http://www.dscc.org/news_item?press_release_KEY=609

In an event that is already being dubbed his “Mt. Macaca moment,” Bob Schaffer launched his first TV commercial of the 2008 campaign yesterday, claiming in it that “Colorado is my life.” Odd, then, that Schaffer’s commercial highlights a mountain…in Alaska. (Or at least it did before Schaffer’s campaign manager told the Denver Post that “the ad would be pulled and re-edited with Colorado mountains.”)

Schaffer’s had a few other geography-related ‘oops’ so the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee put together some practice questions for the next time he has a geography quiz – or a Senate campaign.

1. In a TV commercial where you talk about proposing to your wife on Pikes Peak, what mountain should you show in the background?

7. That was funny stuff
...I remember a few years ago, either Vail or Aspen used our local mountain (Sneffels) in an ad for their resort.

Sure, it's much prettier, but you can't get there from their ski lifts. Hundreds of miles away. :D

...for the record, a random Google image of Mt. Sneffels:

4. WOO HOO!! We need 2 Democratic Senators from Colorado..
We screwed up with Salazar and I hope that another Senator Udall will make up for that. His opponent Bob Schaffer was one of the Repugs that went with Abramoff to the Marianas and proclaimed them a model for a "guest worker" program here in the US.

It's also good to hear that Federico Pena was our final Super-Delegate. Go Obama.
