James is the second teenager killed in less than two weeks. Friends and relatives of 15-year-old Jeffrey Zachary buried him Wednesday after he was gunned down in a May 6 drive-by on Dubois Street. Jeffrey's relatives begged for an end to the killing.

Police said James was stabbed shortly after 11 p.m. on South near Lander Street. Lots of people must have seen it, police said, but witnesses had not come forward. Coston said a perverse symptom of the stop-snitchin' culture of the streets has kept someone from helping detectives find James' killer.

1. "stop-snitchin' culture" = deteriorating respect for police.
Who'd a thunk it?

2. watch the wire on hbo
Actually, everyone in the hood seems to know who the criminals are and who is in charge. Then they see the police ignore the Jaguar driving "OG", and bust the nickel bag selling teen punk.
The cops are known, their families are known, the OG can have anyone killed, anywhere. The cops leave them be and bust the nickle bag sellers, cause it is safer to do so.

The cops will bust this murderer, but the public's participation will be hidden, as they don't want to be the next victim.

If you read the second article that I linked, you will see direct evidence of what you posted - the inner city does not see the cops as helpful.

3. you are exactly right about the police
This story breaks my heart. I recognize one of the people quoted in the first article from when I worked at Head Start.

When is this shit going to stop.

My best friend in Poughkeepsie used to live in Charles Street Housing. They used to have this crap go on all the time. One night they found a kid with a cap in his head right in the parking lot in front of her apt.

4. When will it stop?
Not until the black market is eliminated by legalizing the commodities that keep the illegal trade so lubricated with money.

5. it was pretty much a rhetorical question
I'm just so pissed and saddened by these articles. I have a lot of friends that I care about in those areas. It seems nothing has changed and like nothing ever will :(

6. Zion Lions is a basketball program
The kids in it either turn their lives around or die. The program is super awesome and works great. The streets are just a very hard opponent to defeat.

Solidarity.
