I'm thinking of that 70,000 acres burning in the Everglades...and the other fires from Panhandle to around Jacksonville and Tampa...

Keep safe...

1. Depends on which way the wind blows... I live in SW Florida...
Bonita Beach/Naples area. No smoke here. Most of the fires are burning farther north east near Lake Oke, 70000 acres might seem like a lot, but in terms of Florida, it's not. This happens every year right around this time. In the next few weeks the summer rains will get started.

2. It's been really bad here today
The dog wouldn't even go outside this morning because the smoke was so bad, but it was better by this afternoon.

I am in SE Florida (near W. Palm Beach)

3. Not a problem in Central Florida...the Orlando Sentinel newspaper...
Edited on Mon May-19-08 09:32 PM by DAGDA56
...says the Brevard County fires are 90 percent contained. That's over on the east coast, some 50 miles away. I smelled some smoke a few nights ago, but nothing recently. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/state/orl-bk-wildfires-051908,0,27770.story

8. I live in the....
extreme NW corner of the panhandle and I haven't smelled a thing. Our rainy season starts around July and we'll get rain almost every afternoon. So far so good, up here anyway? I have relatives living all over Fl....talking to them, none have complained?

Edited on Mon May-19-08 09:35 PM by angrycarpenter
the other day here in the panhandle. It was twenty miles away and my girlfriend thought it was a storm, huge black cloud of smoke. I have woken to the smell of smoke every morning for a month. It makes for some beautiful sunsets and sunrises.

Edit to say I live in Eastpoint Fl. about 75 miles SE of Tallahassee on the coast.

13. Thanks for replying and other replies... We have relatives in Boca...but
they must be out of town...because I just get their answering machine. Figured they were close enough to Everglades that when the wind blew across Alligator Alley...they might be having some problems. But, it doesn't sound too bad at W.Palm...although smelling smoke from forest fires can get to ya if it's heavy enough. :hi:

10. Prevailing winds are from the ENE...
...and not affecting the east coast (typical sea breeze stuff). I'm dealing with it by being in Denver for the foreseeable future.

Here's the overhead from OSEI.

11. NE of Tallahassee and no smoke visible.
Last year with the fires in the Okefenokee and other parts of the SE we had thick smoke for a month or more. Some days the sun was only a small glowing spot in an orange gray sky:

That shot was during the time we were building our house at around noon just about a year ago.
