'Marketplace' Report: Newshour to Die?
Source: npr

The clock may be ticking down on The Newshour. The Public Broadcasting System's long running prime time news magazine is running short on cash. The financial problem began last summer when one of its largest sponsors — Archer Daniels Midland — dropped its support after 14 years. Janet Babin tells Alex Cohen what the problems could mean for the news program.

I found the Newshour dull for some reason. Maybe has something to do with the persona of the news anchors.

The news were great, but I kept falling to sleep after watching them for a few minutes.

1. All we need is Fox News.
And that's where we're headed. Nothing but Fox News or an imitator.

2. Republicans coopted the CPB, and defanged & denatured programs like NPR ATC and Newshour

They don't have a reason to live anymore. They tried to defund and abolish these news sources outright for years, but in vain. Insisting on the ability to influence content, set limits, all the while growing their ideology inside of them like a tapeworm managed to do what honest opposition to public broadcasting could not. The public media gradually became indistinguishable from the content of corporate propaganda and thus redundant and obsolete in the marketplace.

12. Yep....they got "taken over" and I used to watch them regularly about 14 years ago
but gave up when Gwen Iffel came on board and they seemed to lose their way. Found out later she's Condi Rice's best friend. Says a lot about the tone of coverage...Judy Woodruff/Gwen/Gloria Borgia in the old days before she showed herself as a Repug Plant.

They haven't broken much in the missing 14 years since I stopped watching. Haven't seen any posts of any news from that show posted on DU in the six years I've been here on DU.

I'd feel sad that some of their viewers would be pushed onto Faux or the dwindling Network coverage, though.

On the there hand, for all its faults and bias, it's about the only American TV program that goes into any depth about news from around the world.

6. NPR....ain't
what it used to be, now that the bu$h administration has battered it into submission. I have grown very tired of them of late, so much so that I have to turn it off when they start "glowing" about some republican douche bag and how swell it all is. Our local affiliate can't afford to air the good stuff on Saturdays, or maybe they aren't producing it. Saturday was our prime listening day, so now we are looking elsewhere...without much luck.

7. Newshour is the only news I can stand watch.
Even with its new "management", it is still light years ahead of any of the cable news channels:puke: I would rather nod off to a good news program then watch an entire hour of something that is actively trying to make me retarded.

10. commercial breaks
are the only thing that lets me watch any broadcast news show that time of day. It is about the time that dinner is being cooked and pots do not stir themselves.

Amherst, Massachusetts - Researchers at the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts released the Toxic 100, an updated list of the top corporate air polluters in the United States.

"The Toxic 100 informs consumers and shareholders which large corporations release the most toxic pollutants into our air," said James K. Boyce, director of PERI's environment program. "We measure not just how many pounds of pollutants are released, but which are the most toxic and how many people are at risk. People have a right to know about toxic hazards to which they are exposed. Legislators need to understand the effects of pollution on their constituents."

The Toxic 100 index is based on air releases of hundreds of chemicals from industrial facilities across the United States. The rankings take into account not only the quantity of releases, but also the relative toxicity of chemicals, nearby populations and transport factors such as prevailing winds and height of smokestacks.

16. Music to CNN's ears
"The news were great, but I kept falling to sleep after watching them for a few minutes."

No offense intended, but that's what got us into this media problem in the first place. (yes, it was you who kept falling asleep). Back in the mid nineties, CNN began arguing that Americans were bored with the traditional news format so they scraped male dominated anchor oriented news broadcasts and went for a perky, fast paced, and flashy broadcast with many unknown TV personalities. Twelve years later, the Newshour is the only serious news broadcast left on television. And not enough people care to save it.

Sadly, the Newshour will be missed. Fortunately, we have the Internet now, so it is not vital anymore.
