Glioblastoma Multiforme

Of the estimated 17,000 primary brain tumors diagnosed in the United States each year, approximately 60% are gliomas. Gliomas comprise a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that differ in location within the CNS, in age and sex distribution, in growth potential, in extent of invasiveness, in morphological features, in tendency for progression, and in response to treatments.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is by far the most common and most malignant of the glial tumors. Composed of a heterogenous mixture of poorly differentiated neoplastic astrocytes, glioblastomas primarily affect adults, and they are located preferentially in the cerebral hemispheres. Much less commonly, GBMs can affect the brain stem in children and the spinal cord. These tumors may develop from lower-grade astrocytomas (World Health Organization grade II) or anaplastic astrocytomas (WHO grade III), but, more frequently, they manifest de novo, without any evidence of a less malignant precursor lesion. The treatment of glioblastomas is palliative and includes surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

4. My uncle had a brain tumor, had surgery, lived 10 more years
He was in his 70's when they found it. So maybe Teddy will be okay too.

6. It depends on what kind it is
Here's hoping it's benign. We don't want to hear the word glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma multiforme. My father died of that, so I'm all to familiar with it. It favors older men.

13. Sympathy to the Kennedy family as they face this ordeal...
and to you, spinbaby, for knowing too well what exactly Sen. Kennedy faces.
