Never heard of him? You probably saw a comedy involving him or someone portraying him.

He inherited many, many, many millions from the A&P supermarket fortune. He was at one time, one of the richest people in the world. A&P actually rivaled GM at its height.

He also decided that he was an artist, art critic, art supporter, entertainer, movie maker, and generally what you would expect when too much money, a serious attention deficit disorder, and not understanding the word "No" can do to someone. . He threw money at an art colony in LA (it failed), he created the incredibly bad mag called Show (it failed), he started a gallery in NY, with a great start, only to deny space to any modern artist (it failed). He hated "modern" art, and eventually every single person in his foundation resigned in protest. Even post impressionists were too modern for him.

He blew through many millions, but was so rich, he never gave it a thought. He also never achieved any success in any field, nor did he ever finish much of what he started. Lampooning him was hard, because the real story was even crazier than any actor or screen writer could portray. Just the story of his resort in the Bahamas is a side splitter. (He spent 30 millions building it, but forgot to apply for a gambling license, causing it to go under.)

97 years old.
