Among the potential Democratic candidates: Martha Coakley, the state's attorney general; Rep. Edward J. Markey; former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II, Kennedy's nephew; and Kennedy's wife. The Republican contenders could include former Gov. Mitt Romney or former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey.

The Dem. Party doesn't HAVE another Teddy!

If Teddy vacates it before January 2011, a Dem governor can appoint a replacement.

18. Yep.
Although a malignant glioma is a very bad actor (if it's a glioblastoma MF, the prognosis is even worse) it always bothers me when the media talking heads start discussing replacements as if the person is already dead.

There are private discussions among the Kennedys and the party in the state, to be sure.

6. Ted is a politician
Edited on Tue May-20-08 04:49 PM by nichomachus
And he knows well the implications of the timing of his departure. I'm sure he and his advisers are planning the best strategy.

The best bet, from a political point of view would be to time the resignation so that the election of a new senator, which must take place between 145 and 160 days (by law) will coincide with the general election, which is guaranteed to have a heavy Dem turnout.

If they wait until circumstances dictate it, then it could be a dicey proposition, since they've only got a 15-day window. If he were to become incapacitated at the wrong time, the candidates could be forced to campaign between Thanksgiving and New Year, for example, which would be a terrible time for an awful lot of reasons. The same goes for being forced to campaign between July 4 and Labor Day.

Ted's a pro and will make the right decision. I'm sure he wants to make sure that his successor won't be someone who will undo a lot of the good things that Ted has done.

15. Thanks, Nichomachus. You're absolutely right about this.
We need that senate seat to be Democratic (even though we don't live in Massachusetts anymore). However, it's difficult to assume how this illness will advance. He could be OK, but then again, Dr. Sanjay Gupta said the tumor is near the thinking, reasoning, and speaking centers of his brain.

Tough call. I wish him well as he faces what we all face. At least, he had some time to get his life in order, if that is necessary in any way.

Peace, love, and happiness,

Radio Lady

And he's pretty happy in NY for now. He can do it if he switches
his residence, of course. But first, he'd have to want to. At the
moment, it just isn't the case.

Plus, my daughter had her heart set on taking his Environmental

33. What the doctors are saying
The doctors said decisions regarding the best course of treatment for the 76-year-old senator would be determined after further testing and analysis.

But other specialists said that the diagnostic details released by the hospital indicated that Kennedy has terminal brain cancer and most likely less than three years to live -- perhaps much less.

"Unfortunately, it's a really serious tumor," said Dr. Patrick Wen, clinical director for neuro-oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Mass. General described the tumor as a malignant glioma; Wen said that probably means the tumor is at stage 3 or 4 on a four-point scale of severity, with 4 the most serious.

"The average survival for a Grade 4 tumor is 14 or 15 months," he said. "For a Grade 3 tumor, it's two to three years. Unfortunately, the older you are, the worse it is. The biology of the tumor is worse, it's more aggressive."

Mass. General did not mention any plan to operate to remove the tumor, and specialists say that is probably because it is located in an area of the brain, the left parietal lobe, with many important functions, including speech and language. Tumors in this region can affect the ability to understand spoken and written words.

It is not clear how long Kennedy will be able to continue working, specialists say. Wen said that many patients do continue to work while undergoing treatment, which includes radiation and a type of chemotherapy pill that is generally well tolerated.

But Dr. Matthew Tilem, a Lahey Clinic neurologist, said, "I would think that most people receiving this diagnosis would retire in the near future."

for mostly NOT explaining this

I have a medical background

I KNEW what the word meant

And I am sure Kennedy will retire soon... to time it to the GE... the special election that is

I also hope he is alive (and chiefly conscious) when the next president is sworn in. He deserves to see that

In 1998, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack was first elected to serve the people of California’s 45th District through a special election held to fill the seat left vacant by her late husband, The Honorable Sonny Bono.

45. That's how my congresscritter jumped from lobbying to the house.
Bob Matsui knew he was terminal but hid it and ran anyway, died right after the election, and pretty much willed the seat to his wife, Doris. Oh, and stuck Californians with the bill for a special election to replace him for the term he knew he couldn't serve.

Based on that experience, and other spousal takeovers I've seen, I'm really leery of surviving spouses taking over a seat. I don't think it's a practice we should encourage, especially when there's warning and no shortage of good candidates to run.

I don't recall any public speculation about who would replace him. I'm sure there was plenty behind closed doors, but at least people, including the media, had the sensitivity not to circle his death bed like vultures. And Senator Kennedy looks like he's a long way from where Humphrey was when HHH made his last public appearance.
