“Ted, Ted, my dear friend, I love you and miss you,” Mr. Byrd said
As he opened debate on the Iraq spending bill, Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, at 90 the only current senator to serve longer than Mr. Kennedy, was distraught. “Ted, Ted, my dear friend, I love you and miss you,” Mr. Byrd said in halting remarks on the floor.

myself.

1. That was moving. Poor Sen. Byrd.
We have seen it with elderly relatives. You can only lose so many of those important to you in life before you lose it, and Byrd was completely traumatized today. His mention of his late wife in this context was especially heartbreaking.

As someone who remembers the Nixon-JFK election in 1960 as a 9 year old, and all that came after, I haven't been able to wrap my arms around this news today just yet.

3. I remember too
and it brought up that god awful memory of the deaths of JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King.

It was a sad and tearful day for me as well. I cried right along with Senator Byrd I admit.

:(
