A Catholic college run by the Augustinian order of priests. This order was founded on the teachings of St. Augustine, who are a major influence on development of Western Christianity dogma, especially the Roman Catholic Church. He professed the supremacy of the Pope, he laid the intellectual foundation for "just war" and original sin. Regarding Adam and Eve, he wrote that Adam succumbed to his lust and broke faith with God. He blamed women for that sin. He thus gave the Catholic faith arguments that require that priest must be celebate. This was after as a younger man, he was a pagan and spent his time sewing his wild oats and struggled with his lust even after converting to Catholocism and becoming a priest. From Catholic Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo who wrote in 2006:
"According to St. Augustine, he does not agree with God for having created a woman as a companion to man: “it would have been much better arranged to have two men together as friends, not a man and a woman.” He forgot procreation to fill the earth with holy souls, from a pure couple, Adam and Eve. Adam as the first born failed to question “flesh from his flesh,” when he saw her with an evil proposal. It was all in his hands to say no “to my own child whom I bore from my ribs.” He failed God, he did not take his responsibility. He is the one who is a lot more at fault. God had strongly whispered into his ears, as to the way to live in Eden, in the midst of such possible attractive fruits. He disappointed God the more. That is why first God looked for him, and questioned him on the matter."
So St. Augustine blamed the woman for her "evil proposal" - meaning - Eve said "Hey Adam, baby, let's get it on." Adam gave in to his lust and displeased God!
With my experience in the high school run by the Augustinians, I was driven away from my ardent Catholic faith by these priests - I was an altar boy, but never touched by these sexually repressed poor souls. But I did have direct experiece with their obsession with sexual information. For example, when I was ten years old, I confessed impure thoughts for having found my older brother's Playboy under the bed. The priest wanted to hear very detailed information about what I saw and felt. It was very wierd and creepy. It was the first of many instances that I recall beginning to question the teachings of the church. This is just one instance and I learned to stay away from these people, fortunately. I instintually felt that there was something "off" about these men!
I have come to understand that what is repressed is obsessed! It is unnatural for men or women to deny basic natural inclinations to have sex. To deny that natural, hormonal impulse is sick and I believe is the basis for so many priests molesting childen and their misogeny about women.
Villanova is one of the most conservative universities, even for Catholic colleges. It is filled with priests, lay faculty and students who deny reality, just as republicans do.
