As the cost of crude tops $130 a barrel, top oil executives are on Capitol Hill today to testify before lawmakers about the latest smackdown of the US economy - the rising cost of fuel.

According to the Washington Post, "Five oil company executives held up their right hands and swore to tell the truth at the hearing, which also included ConocoPhillips and the U.S. subsidiaries of BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell. Oil company executives repeated a familiar mantra that crude oil markets - not profiteering at the gasoline pump - is the prime reason behind high prices."

While there's plenty of blame to go around, there's no question the oil barons are reaping record profits while Americans are breaking open their piggy banks to buy overpriced gasoline to fuel their needlessly low mpg autos to drive them over crumbling roads toward their low-paying, soon-to-be-outsourced jobs so they can attempt to purchase suddenly-more-costly groceries and make their ballooning sub-prime mortgage payments.

Newsweek reports from the hearings today: "'The president once boasted that with his pals in the oil industry, he would be able to keep prices low,' said Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the panel's chair. 'Instead, it is his pals in the oil industry who have benefited.' J. Stephen Simon, executive vice president of Exxon Mobil Corp., said profits have been huge "in absolute terms" but must be viewed in the context of the massive scale of the industry." He also said high earnings are needed 'in the current up cycle' to pay for investments in the long term when profits will be down.' Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said Exxon's annual profits increased from $11.5 billion to $40.6 billion in the past five years and there was no explanation for "why profits have gone up so high when the consumer is suffering so much." The five companies earned $36 billion in the first quarter of this year.

The article continues by quoting the committee chairman, "'Current up cycle,' that's a nice term," replied Leahy with sarcasm, 'when people can't afford to go to work" because gasoline is costing close to $4 a gallon.' He asked Simon what his total compensation was at Exxon, a company that made $40 billion last year. Simon replied it was $12.5 million annually."

Truthseeker, when's the last time you made close to $13 million a year?

The lame duck in the oval office cares nothing about the problem, as evidenced by his empty-handed return from his latest vacation in Saudia Arabia. So is a lawsuit the answer?

According to Reuters, "The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure. The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow. The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto."

Has it come to this? The American people have to sue for affordable resources? Can we sue to get our manufacturing jobs back? How about health care; can we sue to get coverage? Clean air and water? An increased minimum wage?

For an administration that "hates" trial lawyers, the Bush Crime Family sure is leaving wide open the door to the civil courtroom.

Matthew is adorable. I just want to pick him up and gently dance around with him. When Charlie (as an infant) was screaming, gently dancing around to Marvin Gaye calmed him down. He hated Tammy Terrell (sp?) and would start screaming again, and to this day he can't stand the duets they did. :hi: :hug:

Republican Senator John Cornyn has lashed out at war veterans in response to our TV ad in Texas urging him to support the new Webb-Hagel GI Bill.

According to Roll Call (password protected), the Cornyn campaign "dismissed the charges of VoteVets.org as unfounded":

"The anti-war crowd is determined to use our men and women in uniform for their political advantage, even if our national security is jeopardized in the process," Cornyn campaign spokesman Kevin McLaughlin said.

What a bunch of jokers. Jim Webb and Chuck Hagel (who devised the new GI Bill), Rick Noriega (Cornyn's opponent), and VoteVets.org (whose veterans created the ad) have--not surprisingly--all served in a war. Yet we're the "anti-war crowd" according to the Cornyn campaign. However, John Cornyn--who was vehemently against serving in a war himself--is, I think, the real "anti-war" guy here, having avoided service during Vietnam.

Regardless, as far as his accusation goes that we're the ones jeopardizing national security, Cornyn actually takes the cake on this one: He's the one who's kept us in this disastrous war in Iraq. He's the one who's supported policies that have nearly bled the Army dry. He's the one pre-occupied with Shia-Sunni strife in Iraq, while terrorism flourishes in Afghanistan. He's the one who voted against giving our troops proper rest and recovery periods--thus weakening our military. And he's the one who's prepared to kill military recruiting by keeping the GI Bill weak enough to prevent recruiters from using it as a viable "carrot." In fact, Cornyn's policies are the reason that 60 percent of the military's officers believe that "the military is weaker than it was five years ago."

So I don't think the Cornyn campaign really wants to go there with this "even if our national security is jeopardized" nonsense. Cornyn is a veritable champion when it comes to weakening our national security. The troops--especially those who've served in Afghanistan--know that. And we'll keep reminding him--and his constituents--of that fact throughout the year.

Their first child was born here and when he went to preschool, I mentioned that he was gonna have a warped speaking pattern as he was gonna be with people who talk as I do, and be at home with his parents. She thought that I was nuts until she told me that yes, it was happening and that she was hearing the same words spoken in Boston(ian) and Tennessean! :rofl: :hi: :hug:

Mr. c's lived in Calif. for 32 years and thinks he's lost his accent. The minute someone meets him they ask "Are you from Boston?" Yet when he's back among his kith and kin, even I can't understand him. Oddly enough, I was working at Boston's Logan Airport years ago when a passenger asked me "Are you from Cleveland?" I expressed surprise at her remark, and she replied "You talk just like my mother-in-law."

Mr. lefty will tell me that I have that "GA thing going on" when I talk to our neighbor who grew up in south GA, and when I talk to a friend who lives in N GA. I tell him repeatedly that if I spent 2 days in either middle GA or S GA I would come home talking much differently, and when I spent 2 weeks in Cochran, GA, at a basketball camp my Mom was threatening to smack me until I 'stopped talking like that'. (I grew up in N GA)
