This Do you feel a draft made me think about it. If such a thing were to happen, it has to be done the right way, across the board. No exemptions for gender, class, school, number of children you have or anything. If your number is drawn and you are physically able to provide any type of service the military needs you are in.

1. The problem I have with a draft, among many others, is not the ability of some to "opt out"...
...let's assume everyone of a certain age and fitness is inducted. The next question is who gets to do what? Anyone who has been in the service will tell you some jobs are more dangerous than others. Initiate a draft, and you'll see the return of the "Champaign Unit".

2. The affluent and well-connected would always find a way around a draft.
Let the other guy's kid go off to war is their first priority.

5. Ideally, if such a thing were to have to come about, convicted of attempting to avoid the draft = 30

years in prison with no parole.

3. The current "stop-loss" policy is an unfair draft in effect today.
People sign up for the military for many reasons, but their obligation is to defend the US. That obligation has been abused by the Iraq War, and "stop-loss" is just an insult added to that abuse.

4. you would have to be very, very naive

to believe that the children of the rich and powerful will ever be put in harms way no matter what the law or rules say. It's not going to happen, ever, under any circumstances. This is why the entire 'a draft would reduce the likelihood of war' argument is bullshit.
