Customers in shopping centres are having their every move tracked by a new type of surveillance that listens in on the whisperings of their mobile phones.

The technology can tell when people enter a shopping centre, what stores they visit, how long they remain there, and what route they take as they walked around.

Oh, mah freakin' gawd!

The surveillance mechanism works by monitoring the signals produced by mobile handsets and then locating the phone by triangulation – measuring the phone’s distance from three receivers.

As a surveyor. He said they could accurately pinpoint in an eight-square mile area a space of one inch. That no matter where he was, so long as he could see a small bit of blue sky, they could find him...

I can see the good (finding your surveyor friend if he were to become lost) and the negative -- tracking our movements liked tagged animals.

We will be told: If you have nothing to hide it should not bother you, this will help with the War on Terror, it will save American lives, you are not patriotic if you don't support this.

Don't people ever shut up?
Everywhere I go I see people meandering along, yammering on their cellphones instead of watching where they are going. They don't even pay attention to their children.
I don't like surveillance, but in this case, I think the constant yakkers are just asking for it.

Phones are in constant contact with the network (they send signals every couple of minutes or so) even if it is not in use.

I refuse to own a cell phone. I pay cash. When they ask for a zip code or phone number at the register, I give fakes.

In other words, I just refuse to co operate.

Best is when they ask for an address (there are some stores that do). I get really creative.

Have security throw you to the ground and take every penny you have. That's basically what they are trying to do with all their brain washing mind games. Like ringing a bell to trigger an impulse to buy. They are trying to deprive you of your ability to hold onto your money. Why not just do it the old fashioned way and have security stick a gun in our faces?
