Minn. Minor League team giving out 'Bobbleheads' of the Larry Craig Tap incident (w/pic)

During the Sunday, May 25 Saints game, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a bobblefoot. The design is a bathroom stall, with a foot that peaks out of the bottom and "taps" up and down. The day coincides with National Tap Dance Day.

7. I'm appalled
This "toy" is a snide and ugly representation of gay males.

Ok, it alludes to one individual, one that has our contempt for other matters.

Craig is a hypocrite, and has sullied himself with his cynical conservatism. He's the archetype of the self-serving republican

I don't care who he has sex with, that kind of bigoted witch hunt is the province of republicans. In truth, the ambush that snared him and brought him down is a perfect example of a morality law at it's worst application. I hate to see us, in our outrage at all things republican, to stoop to the tactic of clenis hunting.

I find the *numerous* gay slurs on DU to be distasteful and unworthy. I've read too many posts that equate to bigotry; mentions of "gender bending" or closeted homosexuality.

I don't see how such callous and unthinking comments can fail to hurt our gay brothers and sisters. It surely hurts our image as a progressive body.

No offense to the OP, she reported an event and left us to discuss our opinions. I am not suggesting that she supports this gay bashing.

10. look at the photo, rock
Can you identify Craig's shoes? That isn't Craig, it's an anonymous "faggot".

This is representative of what homophobes IMAGINE gay men are up to all the time; it's an ugly stereotype meant to stigmatize gays.

The team in question is carelessly and callously perpetuating bigotry.
So are we, if we accept and applaud this "joke".

I once heard a republican woman, at a social event, try to cap her condemnation of Clinton's Monica adventure with the exclamatory query, "In the Oval Office?" My response was, "Why do you care?".

I care no more for Craig's sexual vagaries than I do about Bill's. I detest Craig for his politics, and admire Clinton for his. BOTH used very poor judgment for public figures. Both are "guilty" of giving in to a human craving.

Both have been persecuted for spurious reasons; Clinton because the neocons will use ANYTHING to gain control (despite the fact that many, if not most, presidents have had affairs and mistresses), Craig because he was stung in a trap that has been recognized as predatory since the '50s and can be used to promote the *Anti*-gay Agenda.

Yes, Craig should have gotten a room. Had he been arrested with a prostitute, would this team promo a "handjob bobble" to commemorate the event?

As a group of progressives, we need to reach for understanding of our homosexual members and try to imagine how these ugly stereotypes cause them pain.
As members of society, we need to work towards accepting and understanding the diversity of human need for companionship.

And we certainly need to no longer be fools, tricked into advancing a stereotype because we gloat over the weakness of an adversary.

11. If the incident hadn't happened, the bobblefoot would have no reason for being
Edited on Fri May-23-08 04:32 PM by rocknation
except as a negative stereotype gratuitously smearing all gays. But the bobblefoot's reason for being is Larry Craig alone: the team has turned his arrest and denial of his "sexual vagaries" into a souvenir, an icon, and a cautionary tale simply because the incident took place in the team's home state. Its tastefulness is certainly arguable. But rather than use it as a political statement, negative stereotype, or an inspiration for homophobia, I don't think the bobblefoots' future owners are going to do anything more significant than occasionally take it off the shelf, bobble it, remember what happened to Craig, and chuckle.

Had Craig "been arrested with a prostitute, would this team promo a 'handjob bobble' to commemorate the event?" Probably not, because as "events" of this nature go, it would have much less "news" value: it's the man-bites-dog uniqueness, irony and hypocrisy of Craig's situation that the team is exploiting. Would the team be exploiting with THIS promo if the Craig scandal had happened elsewhere? DEFINITELY not, because they would have no grounds on which to believe that a lot of their fans would want it.
