Stupid Kansas Republicans. They put me on their e-mail list shortly after I was elected as a delegate to the DNC in 2004. Go figure! I've always supposed that they managed to confuse their mailing list with their enemies list. Either that or this is part of their outreach program to try to recruit diehard Dems.

fwiw, here are the ticket prices:

Co-Host & Photo Reception (Per Couple) $7500

Co-Host & Photo Reception (Per Individual) $5000

Sponsor (Per Individual) $1000

Reception (Per Individual) $500

We should take up a collection and have you go to the photo reception. Maybe you could get next to * and tell him what a douche bag he is.

5. I'm not in Kansas anymore
I moved to Maryland earlier this year and I see no reason to go back for this. However, if we take up a collection we could send some Kansas DU'ers. I think Proud2Blib and MuseRider would go. I'm pretty sure Proud would tell him he's a douche bag and then she'd let him know how she really feels.

But I do have several friends who are interested in going. They have been around to welcome him every time he has been here. And it sure seems like a lot lately. He was just here in March. And Cheny was here right after that. Shit, I wish they'd go bother some other metro area.

When he was here in Feb, here is how David welcomed him:

I know too many of those people and have spent far too much time around them to ever want to do it intentionally! Blech, ptooi! Add Bush** and I guarantee I would walk out and shoot myself. Besides, I can't think of anything bad enough to say to him. Seriously, I do not think humans are capable of thinking of stuff that bad unless they are that bad.

Hey you! I never told you that I am mad at you for moving away. :hi: So how is your new home? I bet you miss your big busy family.

46. I've heard good and bad about Thornburg
I just don't see this as a good move for any of the so-called moderates who are attending.

You're mad? How do you think I feel? We're still settling in and we're meeting a lot of wonderful people. We're starting to get politically active locally. I'm in talks to start a website for local Dems/Progressives and others. We had a meeting this past Sunday with the heads of local groups. Over forty people showed up and they represented groups from sustainable living to GLBT issues. And we already have a follow-up meeting planned for Tuesday night. We're trying to coordinate our legislative lobbying efforts and have a more unified front.

My family is following us out here. One of my stepdaughters will be attending Maryland University this fall. (The Admiral is back home this weekend to attend her graduation in Lawrence.) Another one will be here for most of July. My brother and his girlfriend are bringing out one of my nieces and maybe a nephew or two sometime this summer as well. Finally, evlbstrd and his brewing buddy are going to try to make out this summer. Then there are a number of our friends who are already lining up to stay with us for the inauguration in January. If you want to come out, we've got a place for you too.

I'm also finding a whole new family (of friends) out here. I'm expecting between 15 and 25 friends Sunday night to watch "Recount" at our house. Thankfully we have a house that will accommodate this many.

Are you missing the big Kansas storms? I would miss them.

You sound very busy and very happy and for that I am glad. Still, just knowing you were 30 miles away, even though we really never did get together much, was nice.

You get em Mabus, they do not know how lucky they are yet :).

57. I don't just miss the storms, I miss the sanity
I really, really miss Kansas. I'm staying busy so I won't go insane. We're doing our best to bring some of what we've learned from Kansas to here and, so far, people understand what we're trying to do and they like it.

We'll be moving back to Kansas as soon as we get down to two kids in college. Right now, with the one graduating this weekend, we're up to four in college. The expenses were starting to kill us and we were broke. We had to move to try to regain some financial solvency. This whole move was really sudden for us too. Believe me, a year ago, moving was the farthest thing from our minds. But we're here so we're going to make the best of it.

Don't worry, I'm still a Kansan and proud of it. We'll be back every once in a while. I might be back as soon as August. When I come back, I will give you a call and hopefully we can get together.

As for larryville we went into business with the Lawrencian (an alternative newspaper) and lawrencefreenet.org (ISP provider) to form a new media conglomerate. Our new business is Free Planet, Inc. Last month we got our license for a radio station and we're looking for investors to help free Lawrence from the grip of the Journal-World. And this month we formed a PAC for the elections.

It's been our dream to get something like this off the ground. It's frustrating to do it from a distance but we're doing it.

edited to add, we've got some other websites that we're developing. We got larrypedia.com and we're working on a wiki for, by and for Lawrence and larrysphere.com, a community blog.

But if I had I would have missed all their wonderful stories these past few years. I still remember the e-mails saying that Jim Barnett had Sebelius on the ropes and how they were going to retake the Kansas governorship in 2006.

I swear, their e-mails are almost as funny as The Onion. I hate the idea of giving it up.

56. Jim Leach had been using faux Indian(sic) headbands as a parade
trinket for kids for three decades. It was a paper band with a feather in the front. I am sure you have seen something similar in novelty stores
I and many others had complained to the Leach office over the years individually about how they were essentially racist. Leach had stiffed all of us for years.
Well as Bush brought out the activist in many of us, people started meeting people. One group that formed took on the local ClearChannel station and got them to play at least some AirAmerica. This was during the 2006 campaign.
After AAR was on the air, we met for a sort of final meeting. Someone asked what else we could do. I immediately said I would love to get rid of them goddamned headbands. So we decided to attack it.
We met up with a UofIowa native American professor who had successfully gotten Leach to quit handing out the headbands in Johnson county years before. Johnson County is the home Iowa City and the UofIowa.
After an initial request to the Leach campaign which they blew off, we started showing up at his town meetings and asking why he would continue to hand out something that was offensive. He tried to ignore us, but you could tell we were getting to him.
Finally, the professor ahd a guest editorial published in nearly every major paper in the district. About two days later she received an apology from Leach which claimed that he had 'never before heard that the headbands were offensive.'
All this must have had some impact. Dave Loebsack beat Jim Leach in the biggest upset of 2006.

34. I did enjoy it.
It brought back memories. In the early 90's I happened to be at a number of community meetings where I had the opportunity to ask police representatives and the local DA about police training. Specifically I kept asking them why over 100 officers had attended training on Jamaican gangs and witchcraft but only 4 officers had attended training on how to handle suicide calls.

At the time I was working for an attorney who was representing a family whose son was shot to death by the police after they had called them for help. The kid had been drinking for almost 24 hours straight. Late that evening he took a knife out of the kitchen, threatened to commit suicide and stumbled to his room and locked the door. His parents were worried and they called 911. The police responded. They entered the home and refused to talk to the parents. They were only interested in where the kid was, not what had happened beforehand or anything else that his parents had to say. Within a couple of minutes of arriving at the home the cops had coaxed the kid to open his bedroom door and then shot him six times while his parents watched helplessly from the other end of the hallway.

Every time they had a community meeting to tell everyone that the incident had been handled by their police procedures and protocols I'd pull out what their manual and show them that no such procedures or protocols existed. Their standard response was to bring up their training. That's when I'd pull out the records to show that only 4 officers (one of whom was no longer on the force) had attended any training on how to handle suicides. I'd tell them that according to their own police training records, our local officers were more prepared for a "drive-by hexing" (the classes on Jamaican gangs and witchcraft) than they were for suicides (4 officers) or sexual abuse of a minor (2 officers attended training) or domestic violence calls (about ten officers over a four year period had attended training). They hated me but they couldn't keep me out of public meetings. Usually whenever I left those meetings I'd get bumped or someone would say something nasty to me but it never stopped me. Sometimes you just have to take a stand and not let up.

48. And I'm pretty sure Skinner would let us raise money for bail and defense attorneys
I know I'd contribute.

52. I couldn't attend...
I'm afraid of what I would say to the Smirking Chimp. I would create a scene.

even if I am a Jayhawk and you're from North Carolina. Bush is a uniter.
Then again, it may be the margaritas I've been drinking.

70. Especially if you could relive it once a year
and allow others to experience it with you. You know, a cross-between "Groundhog Day" and "Being John Malkovich".

I'm such a lightweight. Three margaritas and I had to go to bed.

67. Oh, heck, go for the $5000 package. After all, $5000 is hard to come by these days.
Oh, wait. You mean THEY want YOU to pay $5000?

68. I wonder if you can get a discount if you use your stimulus check
Finally, I see them as something more than a round-about way to subsidize oil companies.
