Why do individuals pay taxes on INCOME, but businesses only have to pay on PROFITS?

Why do individuals pay taxes on INCOME, but businesses only have to pay on PROFITS?
Isn't each individual a mini-business of getting our ass to work to support our family?

Why is it we can't deduct the full cost of our housing, commuting, student loans, and all things necessary to keep body and soul together so we can get up to go to work each day? Isn't that more worthy than a business mans three martini lunch with some clients at a strip joint?

Ironically, if our taxes were figured this way, I wouldn't even mind the conservative wet dream of a flat tax since after our expense our deducted, most of us make at most a couple of hundred bucks a month.
