California Ford Dealer Commercial: "Atheists, Sit Down and Shut Up"-
Here is a transcript of the ad, with the missing part in blocks. Karen has more recently heard the ad, so I'm putting in what she remembers.

<"Did you know that there are people in this country who want prayer out of schools, "Under God" out of the Pledge, and "In God We Trust" to be taken off our money?">

"But did you know that 86% of Americans say they believe in God? Since we all know that 86 out of every 100 of us are Christians, who believe in God, we at Keiffe & Sons Ford wonder why we don't tell the other 14% to sit down and shut up. I guess I just offended 14% of the people who are listening to this message. Well, if that is the case then I say that's tough, this is America folks, it's called free speech. None of us at Keiffe & Sons Ford is afraid to speak out. Keiffe & Sons Ford on Sierra Highway in Mojave and Rosamond, if we don't see you today, by the grace of God, we'll be here tomorrow."

I heard the audio and the idiot did say these things. You have to download the Mp3 that was taken over a radio station.

Well, that one way to drum up business.

1. Fuzzy Math
Are they counting Jews and Muslims as Christians, or are people following these religions in the 14% who need to just shut up?

5. Call them and tell them that having God's name on money
is akin to making a golden calf, and that money is what Christians are now worshiping. Remind them how pissed off God was about that calf. Money has become a false idol in the US, and it's a damned shame.

Furthermore, the pledge reads one country comma under God. Not onecountryundergod the way so many people do. "under" should be the key word in that phrase, but these fools act like God created the US so he would have a place to live and make money in the capitalistic churches---

the whole thing has just gotten sick.

20. I'm old enough to remember when "under God" was added
It didn't sound right then, and it still doesn't. I NEVER say it. I say the pledge the way I learned it, "....one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

6. They said
they had the right to say "sit down and shut up" because of freedom of speech? knuckle heads!

I guess that gives me the right to walk into their showroom and yell "sit down and shut up because your cars stink and your deals are bad".

26. Actually I own a Ford
and like it and bought it because my previous car (also a Ford/Mazda blend) was reliable and economical.

I like the product but I dislike idiots and this dealer qualifies as an idiot.

8. That asshole has been running ads like that for years...
I lived in Palmdale (20 miles across the valley from Mojave) for 3 years from late 2001 and they were running similar ads back then.

He's a pudunk little Ford dealer with 2 stores. Hopefully Baby Jesus will bless him with excess F150 and Expedition inventory and a zero allotment of small cars.

Then he'll finally go out of business and shut the fuck up.

unless they really work out great deals for people. So great a deal that people will overlook this.

14. He's not big enough to be a problem for Ford.
It might be more of an embarrassment if he had 10 stores and advertised all over California, but he doesn't. The residents of the Antelope Valley are his exclusive audience. He is, as I said above, a pudunk little dealer. His Mojave store is tiny - a classic small town dealership like hundreds of others across the country, but with a lot only large enough to hold maybe 25 cars, tops. The Rosamond store is a little larger, but not by much.

He used to advertise on the only decent Rock & Roll station in Palmdale/Lancaster. I called them once to tell them I thought his ads were beyond offensive, but it made no difference, of course.

13. That's the Antelope Valley.
I lived in that area for 25 years.

I'm not surprised by the ad. It's typical for the area.

There are rational people there, too. They just aren't the majority.

No advertising strategy at all. The guy's just a loudmouth.

If I lived over there I'd go and waste as much of his salesmen's time as possible before walking out.

16. Being a Ford Dealership in Ca these days must really be tough
Sounds like he's trying to get the knuckle dragger's in to purchase his gas guzzling crappy vehicles. Since those are the type of people stupid enough to buy them.

Sounds like God banished him to the desert.

This is truly the middle of nowhere. Makes Barstow look cosmopolitan (I know, I used to live at Edwards AFB, next door).

So he's preaching to the tumbleweeds and tarantulas. LOL

22. Henry Ford would be so proud of you, Keife and Son.
Henry Ford was a low-class racist and antisemite who believed in eugenics and the forced state-sponsored sterilization of the unfit.

If atheists so offend you, you're right. It's best that they take their business to another place.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the civil rights lawsuit you're inviting.

28. He also had communist leanings.
I seriously doubt he'd have agreed with them at all, since he was the one who went to Stalist Russia and helped get a car plant started there and said that, after his tour of Potemkin Soviet Russia, life there was really good and showed how great Communism really was.

23. You know what this means, don't you?
The guy in the commercial cheats on his wife by screwing the dog or a kid or has a human head in his fridge.

Anytime I hear someone proclaim how Christian they are unprovoked like that, I expect some sick scandal to follow.

25. I certainly wouldn't advise anybody to go to the dealershp and pretend they wanted an Expedition . .
I certainly wouldn't want to encourage anybody to do that, and then take a test drive, and then sit down with the financing guy.

And I don't think that anyone who had pursued this recommended course of action would be wise to then tell all present that since you were an atheist, that this was in fact that last place in the world you'd buy a car or truck, and then walk out the door.

Because that would be malicious and cruel!!

Edited on Mon May-26-08 10:06 AM by Juche
Alienating anyone who isn't a rabid christian (which includes moderates, faithful people who aren't christians and secularists) is a great idea. Esp considering that atheists are more educated and more likely to have the discretionary income to buy a new car than the fundie who would enjoy this kind of commmercial.
