EC concerned about chemicals in US chicken
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/index.php?sid=364773

The European Commission has warned of a ban on US chicken meat.

The EC wants the ban on chicken that has been disinfected with chlorine; a regular practice in the US.

It says the meat should only be allowed onto the European market for the coming two years under strict conditions, such as warnings on labels that chlorine has been used.

No wonder the europeans are in better shape

3. This has nothing whatsoever to do with "trade war" activities?
Like getting us back for some tariff or something?

6. I didn't realize genetic engineering had much to do with chemicals in the foods....
Thanks for clarifying that!

9. Snark aside, I think Europeans view doped-up and chemical-saturated chickens thru the same lense....

10. You can't frenchie out on me - je ne te connais pas!
(Naturally, I only know what that means because of this song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miOpFtbGPpo )

In any case, yes, Europeans don't like genetically engineered food.

Europeans also don't like dust-bunnies - does that lead to the conclusion that there's a connection with that?

I'm not concerned with their bad opinion per se, but rather the *change* in their opinion. The chicken was good enough last month, but is no longer? Why? Did their quality control report an uptick in bad chemical presence? Did a study come out saying that the presently accepted amounts are not in fact healthy?

What changed is my main question, and is what lead me to speculate about trade issues.

7. It does seem weird
rinsing in a weak chlorine solution does not seem to be that big of a deal considering the processing that mass amts of carcasses go through and the organisms they carry. I am assuming it is a weak solution....

8. This is a result of speeding up the lines and nearly eliminating inspections
There's more contamination, but it's cheaper to chlorinate the meat than to slow down the lines to improve animal welfare, workplace safety or human health.

11. The South Koreans were protesting U.S. beef...

The new regulations call for South Korea to import nearly all cuts of American beef without restrictions on the age of the cattle. That represents a significant easing of previous rules, which banned imports of meat attached to bones or from older cattle considered more susceptible to mad cow disease.
