Bush invaded Iraq to spread Democracy in the Middle East...
And Cheney didn't intentionally lie about Iraq's Nuclear WMD's.

No, really. It's true I tell you. Why, Scott McClellan swears this is true in his new "tell all" book.

Here, listen for yourself:

1. You want to know the funniest part of all of this?
Edited on Sat May-31-08 06:08 AM by Junkdrawer
Bush, Rove, et. al. now know that the only way to get anyone to believe them is to put something out as "traitorous revelations" and then to fight it tooth and nail.

2. I have a different take
I think it's probably partially true but not in a good way. In my view it just shows how stupid and ideological these idiots are, thinking they could impose democracy at the barrel of a gun. I think it's also true that Bush wanted to secure the oil reserves in Iraq and get revenge for his dad, but I think the invade-for-democracy thing is probably something he stupidly believed in.

Understand I'm not saying it was a noble effort. It was stupid, ideological, and devoid of a whole bunch of logic and understanding of Iraq's people (the Sunni, Kurd, Shia composition). What I'm actually saying is that it's for those reasons that Bush should be known as a complete and utter buffoon. Anyone dumb enough to believe that democracy can be imposed at gunpoint, especially in Iraq given the religious divisions, is truly an idiot.

I think it was probably a 2 shot cocktail with 1 part securing the oil reserves, 1/2 part wanting revenge, the other 1/2 part (and perhaps excuse for) being the democracy thing. Of course this cocktail is still a cocktail, something once imbibed causing inebriation and idiotic behavior. Thus the Iraq war.

5. Myself, I think that 300 to 400 billion barrels of oil was Reason #1...
thru Reason #5 and "spreading Democracy in the Middle East" is the kind of nonsense that is sold to the public and floor speeches at the UN.

7. right on, neo-cons don't give a shit about 'Democracy in the Middle East'
hell, from what i can tell, they find the concept of 'democracy' a burden, esp. right here in the good ol USA.

6. "Democracy" Was A Codeword
They didn't want a true elected democracy...that's not the repugnican way. What they wanted was "their guy" in charge, propped up by a staged vote and then to wave flags and strut around. They wanted to create a doscile client-state that not only put the second largest oil reserves under the thumb of the major oil conglomerates (big GOOP backers) but also one that relied on US services...another place for boooshie's buddies to make billions...and they sure have.

As we've seen, the ideology these thugs claim verbally isn't the one they want in reality. It was a regime that claimed it wasn't into "nation building" (anyone remember that term???) and hated the concept of a federal government...and they were spreading "democracy". It was a bullshit act from the outset.

8. Funniest take on "Spreading Democracy in the Middle East" ever...
Edited on Sat May-31-08 06:51 AM by Junkdrawer
"The level of naivete necessary to believe that the US is spreading democracy in the Middle East is unknown outside of early 70s pornography:

'Gee mister, you mean the time machine won't work unless I take off ALL my clothes?'"

9. Allow me to revise my wording
I didn't mean democracy as in democracy, but exactly as you described it (eg propped-up puppet regime that is pliant with our oil demands). I just meant to say that I think Bush is stupid enough to actually believe such a scam would work. That's all. I didn't mean to suggest that he was being noble. I don't believe that at all.

11. Very Understood
Booosh has been a sockpuppet in this whole fiasco...as he has been all his life. This was all the work of cheney and von Rumsfeld...the only thing missing from their "democracy" was Chalabi running it.

Cheers...

13. Hell yes. Totally agree
They tried to sell that self-absorbed asshole as Iraq's knight in shining armor long after the CIA had discredited him. They're such fucking liars and ideologues it's impossible to know what their true motives were. I'd believe almost anything at this point.

14. Bingo
Democracy to the neo-cons and Samuel Huntingtons of this world means US puppets. Put simply it's good old imperialism.
The only concept that is even more devoid of meaning than Islamofascists is Coercive Democracy. That must be the quintessence of all oxymorons.
But hey what should you expect from goons and morans who believe that they can lead Crusades in the 21st century.

More and more I find myself saying ah fuck it!

17. Another Term "Dollar Diplomacy"
All we have to look at is Zimbabwe and Sudan to see how their concept of "democracy" is applied. No oil and no infrastructure to exploit. What's the upside?

Another elephant in the room is the World Bank that has profited from this "democracy" by imposing draconian policies that benefit the corporates under the mantra of "fiscal responsibility". We've seen how well that has worked here.

The bigger problem is what I've long called an American myopia...how people in this country view the world as us vs. them and how anything and everything that goes on is viewed in American eyes and with a "what's in it for us" viewpoint.

Cheers...

18. We've seen how well that has worked here.
It's worked so well here that our dollar moved from J$1.35 = US$1.00 in 1974/75 to J$71.41 = US$1.00 today. It's all good since many citizens have M16s and AK47s terrorizing the island to the tune of eight murders a day (for May 2008).

After 30 years of resisting social liberalism on behalf of the Washington Consensus people (corporations), the new government has been forced to reintroduce free heath care and free education. We have only wasted three decades and damn we're paying for it.

19. Raygun All But Destroyed Manley
I'm hoping to get to your beautiful country...I was just reading up on Port Royal and have always admired the rich culture of the country. The common thread in what I've read was the exploitation of people...be it the British or Americans. It's amazing you even talk to us.

But then to a twist on a Jesse Jacksonism...when we sneeze, you get a cold.

Cheers...

3. They Can't Get Their Revisions Straight
The last thing they'll EVER admit is that this war was waged for profit...a gluttony for defense contractors, outsourcers, mercenaries and oil companies.

I always laughed at the concept of how one nation could impose "democracy" on another. I had always learned such changes always came from within. Damn me for going to school and paying attention.

20. Most people have zero historical context for the current administration...
They hear seemingly intelligent, highly paid propagandists spouting these platitudes and they assume they must be true.

21. The trick is in bush's definition of "democracy".
To George bUsh & his regime, "democracy" clearly means US hedgemony and all little people voting in US-approved governments who are US-friendly.

22. Scottie is reinforcing McCain's position on Iraq:
1.) Our invasion was noble
2.) The goals were noble
3.) If anything, it was the sales job to the american people that was inept and over the top.
4.) We can still win this if we put competent people in charge and end the extreme RW sales tactics.

If you think about it, sending Scottie out with this "subversive" message and then "attacking" him was the only way the could sell this message.

24. If he said "We went into Iraq for questionable motives" then I might believe...
he's trying to come clean.

The four points in my previous post are my take on McCain's position. Note the absence of any talk of oil or ulterior motives. Now, listen to Scottie say that Bush's chief motives were idealistic.

Scottie is not breaking with the Republicans. He's reinforcing the "They were incompetent, I'll be competent" message of McCain.
