Poll question: Was McClellan right, Bush invaded Iraq ''to secure his place in history and to spread democracy''?
I will leave out my opinion for now. Add your own substantiation.

1. Yes
in his own mind he is a starry-eyed idealist.

The problem is that most of the rest of the world know he's an idiot.

2. Look at the post invasion occupation policy
Edited on Sat May-31-08 11:17 AM by noise
Are shock doctrine policies good faith efforts to build a democratic government?

It's a talking point that has no basis in reality. Bush screwed US soldiers and the Iraqi people...twice. First by way of lying about WMD's and second with the sinister occupation policy (disguised by "Bush is so incompetent" propaganda).

3. I voted Other. I think it was a mixture of neocon fantasies about spreading
democracy, the desire to quickly "knock off" a dictator (who didn't have WMDs), and establishing a bulwark in the ME to safeguard the region's oil.

7. I give that quote to my classes when I go over propaganda
It was an instant classic on par with anything Machiavelli or Hitler said on propaganda.

8. W did what he was installed to do: the bidding of the PNAC
I don't want to assume that everyone here is familiar with the Project for a New American Century, so...

It all seems rather clear.

9. His job for the elites was to "break the egg"
...and he thinks he's the only one bad enough to do it.

Breaking the egg allowed the opportunity for chaos capitalism. In Iraq, in Katrina, in the U.S. economy as a whole. Create or allow chaos, and profit will follow. It's a long-standing teaching principle of the Skull & Bones society, actually. Manufacture chaos and profit from it.

He did his assigned job well. America's economy is broken. Profit is flowing freely to those who bought him.

10. disaster capitalism explains a lot--why they allow mobile homes where there are
hurricanes or tornadoes, and why they rebuild flammable houses that burn down every other year in Malibu.

If you make something that lasts, you can't profit from replacing it.

11. Bush went to war to win re-election
I think Rove convinced Bush that becoming a War President would secure his chance of doing what his father had failed to do and win re-election. It would also result in Rove's dream for a permanent Republican majority riding on Bush's coattails in 2004. They thought it would be an easy, short, patriotic little mission accomplished. They sent Americans off to die for purely domestic political concerns. McClellan mentioned that Bush ran his administration in permanent political campaign mode.

I think Cheney pushed Bush to war by flattering the egomaniacal Chimp with dreams of War President greatness and a second term. But Cheney had darker more imperialistic goals and wasn't concerned with domestic politics, but rather with U.S. hegemony and securing of major sources of the world's oil reserves.

So I think there were two primary impulses that led to the war: Rove pushing Bush to seek War President greatness and re-election; Cheney pushing both of them to go to war but with even more sinister intentions on a neocon global scale. And the Chimp was willing to say and do anything while his yes men around him were telling him how great he was going to be.

12. I think your second paragraph is more accurate than subject line
the interesting thing will be to see who ends up being the fall guy of the two.
