Republicans kick off campaign to shine party image

updated 1 hour, 30 minutes ago

ARLINGTON, Virginia (CNN) -- Three prominent GOP leaders kicked off a campaign Saturday to reshape their party's image, gathering at a restaurant in northern Virginia for the first of a series of town hall meetings.

The goal of the initiative, called the National Council for a New America, is to connect Republican leaders with voters across the country to help get the party's electoral fortunes back on track.

"Certainly our party has taken its licks the last few cycles, but that's why we're here," House Minority Whip Eric Cantor said Saturday. "The reality is, the prescriptions coming out of Washington right now are not reflective of the mainstream of this country."

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said it's time for Republicans "to listen a little bit, learn a little bit." He advised Republicans to work on the party's message and "not be so nostalgic."

"I would say you can't beat something with nothing. The other side has something. I don't like it, but they have it," said Bush, who praised President Obama's tactical approach to politics and commended his 2008 campaign as "forward-looking."

4. The pizza looks good but
stay away from the kool aid (no telling *what* it's spiked with, but drinking it is generally followed by an urge to waterboard the nearest godless commie hippie or illegal alien if they're lucky enough to find one at the time).

5. The 70-80% of people who think we're "on the right track" are
not reflective of the mainstream of this country.

Not only do these idiots need people to write their speeches and sound bites for them - they ought to hire a few people to actually think for them.

I can't tell if they really never think things far enough through to stop and say WTF, if they simply think the rest of us are just too stupid to notice or if they really think that the mainstream of this country is white, middle-aged, racist leaning males who run large companies. Or some combination of above.

6. They won't be back until they find a star like Obama or Dean
Thats just the bottom line. You need a great strategist and likeable personality like Dean. And a good leader that people want to follow like Obama. I don't see either any where in that party

18. Jeb Bush? Oh My God!
Are these people out of their ever loving minds? Does Papa Bush still cling to the pathetic dream that his favored son will be in the White House someday?

This is enough to make me retch. The nerve to parade these people as viable spokespersons after the destruction they have caused to this country and the
global community is arrogant beyond belief.

37. In fairness, this is the most sensible thing they've done since the election
Sitting down for face-to-face chats with voters at least indicates some attempt to find out what they should be doing. Compared to letting Limbaugh and Beck set the agenda, this is grown-up behavior (even if you don't like Romney or Jeb Bush).

41. 50% of the country is still consertive
They just don't think or align them selves with the republican leadership.

The problem for the leadership is that they are beholden to the 10% of the population who will give them money.

The republicans do need an Obama like person who can collect money from the general population, and not just the privileged few. Once they can do that, they can chart a path that is less extreme, and more acceptable to all.
