S. Idaho middle school's soap ban angers parents
S. Idaho middle school's soap ban angers parents

JEROME, Idaho (AP) - Parents are blasting administrators of a south-central Idaho middle school who removed soap from a boys bathroom following vandalism even though hand washing is 1 of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease.

Parents of students at Jerome Middle School say the soap ban earlier this week is especially worrisome considering the continued spread of swine flu in the nation.

The South Central Public Health District sent an investigator who confirmed there was no soap in the bathroom.

The Idaho State Department of Education says lavatories are required to offer soap.

18. I'm thinking they just spill soap all over the floor
not break the soap dispenser.

Making a mess with soap and toilet paper is probably the unwanted behavior.

4. My high school junior comes home complaining that there is no soap in the boys'
rest room at least three times a week. He loses his hand sanitizer on a regular basis.

While there has been some vandalism in the boys' rest room (someone jumped on the sinks), none of it involved soap. The reaction to the vandalism that did happen was to close all but one of the boys' and one of the girls' rest rooms. That didn't go down well in a large (area wise) school with something like 2000 students.

11. my kids are certainly precious and they are perfectly imperfect and will truly act like a
kid.

and

they absolutely have the responsibility above and beyond all others, since they are the only one that can control themselves and make their choices wisely

i know what you mean. kid in mother day out. teacher tells me a couple kids were picking on him. i asked.... waht did son do? her eyes got HUGH i tell you. lol lol. if he did something for the kids to pick on him, we can address that and he has control over situation. if he didnt do anything and kids an ass.... we will talk about that. but i never am of the frame of mind my child is innocent. and even if he is... so what. it is his to figure out how to make it work

9. because the parents have no idea that their kid is doing this.
They don't go bragging to mom and dad about vandalizing their school. Unless they get caught (which doesn't often happen), nobody knows exactly who did it.

10. if i heard they took out the soap i would be asking my boy. and if i addressed the school,
i would be doing it cause i understand the kids are screwin up. there is a reason. my son would hear about his responsibility at the school. who is doing it, and knock it off. what a stupid, wasteful (wasteful always gets my kids) thing to do

12. A parent made a comment on our local paper's website--kids huffing degermer gel
Said that her kids' school had banned kids from carrying the travel sized container because of the huffing and something else dangerous that they were doing with the stuff.

15. Inhaling the smell/"fumes" the stuff gives off
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inhalant

Inhalants are a broad range of drugs in the forms of gases, aerosols, or solvents which are breathed in and absorbed through the lungs. While some inhalant drugs are used for medical purposes, as in the case of nitrous oxide (a dental anaesthetic), this article focuses on the non-medical use of inhalants, as recreational drugs which are used for their intoxicating effect. Most inhalant drugs which are used non-medically are ingredients in household or industrial chemical products which are not intended to be concentrated and inhaled, including organic solvents (found in cleaning products, fast-drying glues, and nail polish removers), fuels (gasoline (petrol) and kerosene) and propellant gases such as freon and compressed hydrofluorocarbons which are used in aerosol cans such as hairspray and non-stick cooking spray. A small number of recreational inhalant drugs are pharmaceutical products which are used illicitly, such as anaesthetics (ether and nitrous oxide) and volatile anti-angina drugs (alkyl nitrites).

Inhalant users tend to be people who do not have access to other drugs or alcohol, such as children, teenagers, incarcerated or institutionalized people, and marginalized individuals. The most serious inhalant abuse occurs among children and teens who "...live on the streets completely without family ties."<1> Inhalant users inhale vapor or aerosol propellant gases using plastic bags held over the mouth or by breathing from a solvent-soaked rag or an open container. The effects of inhalants range from an alcohol-like intoxication and intense euphoria to vivid hallucinations, depending on the substance and the dosage. Some inhalant users are injured due to the harmful effects of the solvents or gases, or due to other chemicals used in the products that they are inhaling. As well, as with any recreational drug, users can be injured due to dangerous behavior while they are intoxicated, such as driving under the influence. In some cases, users have died from hypoxia (lack of oxygen), pneumonia, cardiac failure or arrest<1>, or aspiration of vomit.

17. I think it's the hand gel degermer and not actual soap
I'm assuming it's the stuff that is alcohol based, that stuff you rub onto your hands and don't wash off. Like you, I had no idea til I read the parent's description on why individual students were not allowed to carry the stuff. If I were the parent, I'd be asking if each class was keeping a bottle of the stuff if they won't let the kids bring their own.

14. Are we talking about soap they put in dispensers in restrooms?
That kind of soap?

Apart from busting the dispenser and spilling the soap, what specific menace is present? It sounds like a case of run-of-the-mill vandalism, not entirely unheard of in schools. Not defendable, but hardly unheard of.

A handful of kids bust up the dispenser so the school administrators elect to ban soap for the other 98% of the kids who have never in their lives vandalized anything.

I'm sorry, but that sort of heavy-handed response doesn't strike me as effective conduct by the adults doling out punishment.

Middle schoolers are not all vandals. Some are, but most are not. You don't firebomb the entire yard to get rid of a couple dandelions.
