It was a total throw-a-way but with one in the news made me think about it

Dole-Kemp might have been the best Republican ticket in the last 50 years. If you had to chose one of these, who would you have most trusted to lead the country?


On edit: Please don't age the candidates, Barry Goldwater in this poll is the Barry Goldwater in 1964.

Ford and Dole were amiable dunces so I'd have to eliminate tickets containing them. That leaves McCain-Palin or Goldwater-Miller. In spite of the fact that Goldwater scared the bejeesus out of all of us in 64, is there really any choice?

I'd have to choose Goldwater-Miller. Jack Kemp was a decent person but he shared the ticket with a real mental midget.

Ugh.

Going to go remind myself that Obama won.

Seriously, he would have been SOOOOOO much better than Bush, which is still an understatement.

But, over the previous eight years, he'd become Bush's lapdog. His age was also troubling.

I mean, the prez has a TON of crap he has to deal with. You can see how it has aged all of them. Every president comes out of those 8 years looking like they aged 20. It's a demanding job. (Don't believe me? Take a look at before/after pics of every president over the last 50 years).

That's not to say he couldn't have handled it, but it did mean that it would take a huge toll on his health, which is a valid concern.

Especially when he named Sarah Palin, the biggest dunce in the nation.

In short: John needs to return to his 2000 self in order to regain the respect he's lost.

Anyone who thinks that Dole is any kind of good choice for anything is unaware of his (or Sugar Lips's) record. He doesn't get a halo just because Jack Kemp died.

That was a really awesome book. I am a political junkie and kept hearing that this book was one of the best ones about politicians. It followed many candidates that entered the Repub and Dem primaries that year. Dole actually comes off a good, decent man in it (as does our current VP). Poppy Bush and surprisingly Dukakis do not come off that well at all. Dole really could not stand Poppy Bush. And Junior has a temper tantrum in the first few pages, gotta love the Bushes. I have to go with Dole. Also, I know nothing about Goldwater as I was born in '75.

Ugh.

I'm beginning to think that even the "old" conservatives were heartless bastards.

they seem to be the best R also-rans in my lifetime. I hear history about Barry Goldwater, but I don't know enough about him to vote him as being the most palatable republican in the also-ran category.
