George Will's "California Dreaming"
In today's column George Will blames the "liberals" for California's problems:

No More California Dreaming By George F. Will
"California's increasingly severe and largely self-inflicted economic crisis will deepen May 19 if, as is probable and desirable, voters reject most of the ballot measures that were drafted as part of a "solution" to the state's budget deficit. They would make matters worse. National economic revival is being impeded because one-eighth of the nation's population lives in a state that is driving itself into permanent stagnation. California's perennial boast -- that it is the incubator of America's future -- now has an increasingly dark urgency. … Liberal orthodoxy has made the state dependent on a volatile source of revenue -- high income tax rates on the wealthy."

Recently, George took on global warming by skewing numbers and misrepresenting facts. Now he forgets how right wing ideologues helped put California in its current crisis. Here are three facts that George has conveniently forgotten.
1. Prop-13: Proposition-13 placed severe limits on property taxes and legislative action. It was Prop-13 that put a two-thirds vote on all budget issues. That kept California from passing a budget for months.
2. Enron and Phil Gramm's loophole: Before Enron went belly up, it concocted and carried out a scheme of market manipulations using electicity that bilked California out of at least $40B.
3. Subprime mortgage scandal: Lax regulations and a Milton Friedman belief that markets correct themselves caused the housing bubble and the subprime mortgage mess. The California economy has lost trillions of dollars because of this.

I would remind you that George Will is the most published and read columnist in the US. (He also is given TV time on "This Week" every Sunday.)

1. What's "liberal" about making it possible to raise taxes or fund state projects, such as schools? nt

2. He's wrong
on every thing except Prop 13. Seems like a conservative belief that waiting for the market to correct itself and Enron defrauding the public is a conservative measure.
