Is Virginia Foxx a Sympathetic Character?

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), who offended gay rights groups and her own colleagues Wednesday by saying the infamous murder of gay student Matthew Shepard in 1998 was a "hoax," is now portraying herself as the victim.

Foxx reportedly says she has been receiving death threats ever since she said on the House floor Wednesday, "We know that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn't because he was gay...It's really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."

Telephones in the congresswoman's office were not being answered Thursday afternoon. Calls were diverted to a general voice mail box, which was full and unable to record messages.

The Capitol Police are unaware of any death threats against the congresswoman. Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the Capitol Police, tells the Sleuth there is "no ongoing investigation" of the matter, which means the police have received no information about death threats from Foxx's office.

And people just won't let it go.

Self-invented or imagined. Tha police wouldn't feign ignorance of these things, and if there was evidence, they and the FBI would have it already.

She, like several others, has an uncanny way of pissing me off.

Has she asked that her words be striken from the Congressional Record? I'll bet not. Be assured those words and now being incorporated into emails and direct mail bits to wingnuts and fundies around the country. Be assured they're being told how the "evil libruls" are beating up on poor Rep. Foxx and send money to help fight all this "hate". All she did was speak the talking points given her and the dog whistle was meant more for the parallel universe and be damned what the rest of us think. If anything, the more scrutiny and outrage generated, the more her supporters will claim how SHE's being the one perseucted. Hypcicritcal and despicable, but the modus operandi of the rushpublicans these days.

If she was truly sorry, she would ask to have those words striken and then ammend her comments to offer a true appology. Instead, her words...spoken on the floor of the house...will be echoed by every hate radio spewer as "legitimate".

Really? Did you read the first 8 posts here, because 5 or 6 of them seem to contain a fair amount of hate. Which is pretty much what I figured, that our crowd of bleeding heart liberals would tell her she could find sympathy only

More right wing theatre. If it is true maybe she can empathize with victims of HATE CRIMES!!

I think her claims should be investigated.

Lovely people who call her a "lying piece of filth" or a "Repuke oxygen stealer" in print on a moderated forum cannot possibly be the tip of a hateful iceberg.

People I hate(a very short list) get called something else. She doesn't rate high enough on my scale for hate.

To say what she said about Shepard was bad enough-- but to then turn it into a smear of the very people she's offended... it's beyond indecent.

I hope the good people of North Carolina are watching carefully and will throw her out of office in 2010.
