Memo to Sen. Arlen Specter (RD-PA): You're supposed to be a Democrat now.

In an interview with the New York Times, Specter stated in no uncertain terms that he wants Norm Coleman to win the disputed Minnesota Senate race: "There's still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner."

So what exactly are the Dems getting out of this whole deal?

Late Update: NRSC press secretary Amber Wilkerson gives us this comment: "First he voted against President Obama's budget, then he said he wouldn't be a loyal Democrat, now he wants Norm Coleman to win. We've never agreed so much with Arlen Specter. You just have to wonder whether Joe Sestak agrees with the positions of his fellow Pennsylvania Democrat?"

time to fuck arlen and fuck him good and hard. My first instinct waz thwt the little asswipe would be thorn in our side and there wasn't one damn thing to cheer in his self-serving switch.

He can blather on all he wants to the press about how independent he is, or how he straddles Democrat and Republican positions, but what really counts is how he votes in committee and Congress from now on. If his voting record doesn't change, then I say jettison him. If it does, fine; he continue to say stupid stuff as long as he votes the right way on bills.

time to kill off his dem senate career. he's slime. he always was.

With DINOs like Specter, who needs Repukes. I say we toss the rat bastard back to the other side postehaste.

He won't stand up to a significant primary challenger, and with his career teetering on the brink as it is, it won't take Specter much to offend his supporters in the Democratic leadership the way he offends the Democratic grassroots.

for him in PE. He wouldn't have a chance at winning as an Independent and for Arlen this is all about winning.

I'm really getting sick of him. At first I was thrilled that he switched. Now I wish he'd just go away.

He seems to be a real attention whore and I hope the Dems run a viable candidate against him in the primaries.

here's the whole exchange:

"With your departure from the Republican Party, there are no more Jewish Republicans in the Senate. Do you care about that?

Specter: I sure do. There’s still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner."

It sounds like he's replying to the question in a humorous fashion...maybe?

Given the context, it's quite possible it's a joke.

The problem with joking like that is that once it's in print, people can't see your facial expression or your rolling of the eyes. Just like in emails or posts on DU, where you have to put smilies or the little "sarcasm" thingie so people don't take what you say the wrong way.

It's not a joke like someone sarcastically saying he hopes for Coleman to win.

If he had said, "Hey, Norm Coleman might still win," that would have the same effect without declaring that it would be "doing justice" for Coleman to steal it.

"I sure do. I've been talking with Russ Feingold about this problem, encouraging him to switch to the GOP. Russ is a problem-solver."

"I sure do. I've been having serious discussion with Lindsay Graham about this problem, encouraging him to convert to Judaism. Lindsay cares about the GOP."

Look at what Judd Gregg just did.

"I'm a Democrat who hates Democrats" was already sung by Zell Miller. Miller was badly out of tune as well.

When Al Franken takes his place in the Senate, will Specter shake his hand?

Specter must feel he has to sing his "independent" number a few times before fading from the headlines.
But if all he's going to do is say that the Republican Party has drifted too far to the right for him,
and then follow them rightward AFTER leaving the party, I'd say he's just a little confused about the
order in which he plans his actions. Someone should test him for Alzheimer's.

They would love to see a primary fight, a nice bloody one that leaves disaffected lefties either not voting or voting for a Nader-type.

and if he keeps this up, he damned well should be primaried.

I wanted him primaried from the start, but it's nice to come to your own decisions based on facts, rather than being played by Republicans and far lefters.
