Obama's a Good Tipper
Edited on Tue May-05-09 06:40 PM by Stephanie
Of course he is.

Obama and Biden wait in line like everyone else.

President Barack Obama drops a five dollar bill into the tip jar as he and Vice President Joe Biden, not pictured, make an unannounced visit to Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Va., to have lunch, Tuesday, May 5, 2009. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

We're hungry! Where are our burgers??

Why thank you!

Mine's with cheddar. Joe's Swiss.

Now you're talking. Mmm, burgers!

39. Sorry, but she has a right to express her opinion that this is ridiculous. It is not only
the thread. It is that the media uses this as news when there are so many real issues around. And it's scary to some of us that people here swoon bc Obama and Biden stand on line when the cameras are rolling (as if they had a choice) or leave a tip during a photo op.

50. Yeah? And I have the right to say "Click on HIDE THREAD" if it bugs you.
What's your point? That she has a right to express herself, and I don't?

Just because your beautiful mind gets so overwhelmed by a fun little bit of "infotainment" doesn't mean that the rest of us can't handle this piece of fluff, the economy, the war, and even the local news as well. And maybe a bit more fluff--and maybe, even, a novel and a few cartoons on the TV.

"The media" isn't "doing" anything, except maybe filling a twenty-four hour news cycle. You have a computer--go find a few papers online, and READ them. Turn on CNN, fill up. Then turn on MSNBC. Then turn on BLOOMBERG. Then turn on your local news, your regional news. If you can't "get" news, it's because you're sitting in a high chair waiting for Mommy to come with the airplane spoon and shovel it in your mouth. Stop waiting and whining. Get out there and GET it, if you want it. It's there. You need to stop blaming "the media" because you are PASSIVE. Be active in your search for news, if that's what you want.

You critique the "swooners" who won't stop praising Obama and Company. I critique the "whiners" who won't stop griping no matter what Obama and Company do. Ain't that America!

in line or the chimp, maybe I will whine. Right now, its nice to see them be human and make an effort to keep in touch with reality. this is a way to assure people that are afraid right now that all is going to be well. if they can eat a burger some place and show confidence, then be comforted.

41. Yes, the people in the restaurant at the time are probably thrilled and rightly so. But it is not
exactly what the media should be focusing on. It is not news and it is certainly is not important news. Yet, I've seen the clip at least five times this morning and it's not even 8:30. And to see people here, who are supposed to be serious about politics...

Aw, what's the use? But, we are not screwn only because of lobbyists. We are screwn because the media does not do its job and we are so easily manipulated, not to mention easily herded.

I like those slice-of-life portraits. It's just so damn nice and such a relief to watch the President of the United States acting like the fully-functional and personable adult that he is. He can even converse at length on the fly without mangling the English language, and he pronounces "nuclear" correctly. I enjoy watching him work (and/or play), solo, with his wife, family, his staffers, visitors, or with Biden over burgers. And the fact that it's a place called "Ray's Hell Burger" makes it all the more savory! That's the best part!

51. When did you become a DU administrator? You're overstepping.
There is no rule that says "No lighthearted discussions of the activities of the Chief Executive or his Vice President permitted."

You might want to avail yourself of the HIDE THREAD option, since these threads upset you so. What you might not want to do is tell people to leave the forum because you don't like the nature or tone of their discussions. There is a proscription about that in the forum rules.

He was the king of empty pointless snotty self-important photo-ops.

The photo ops are damn well deserved, and I enjoy reading these posts too.

Hell, I try to tip as much as I can too - President Obama is setting an example.

I can understand your cynicism; the way the media and many politicians camping up the whole notion of having a leader to look up to instead of mocking... that's quite a novel experience for me too.

53. Oh, yeah ............
Having been a brand-new college student when JFK was assassinated, I've lived through all the conspiracy theories about everything, and always scoffed at them.

I scoff no more. Now I see patterns, and I don't think it's my delusional, impaired thinking, because my thinking is neither delusional nor impaired.

Ever notice how these influenza outbreaks take place just when the plate is getting crowded? This latest uproar conveniently obscures the hideous economic crisis, what the banks are getting (more, more, more), the upsurge in violence in Irag, the impending catastrophe in Pakistan, the ratcheting up of our presence in Afghanistan, more people losing jobs, more foreclosures, more bankruptcies, and we get to see the President eat a burger - JUST LIKE A HUMAN BEING!

Understand, I watched the video of Obama at Ray's with great pleasure because, yeah, I'm a fan, and it made me smile. But, not for one moment did I forget everything else. Shiny things don't interest me, but I know I'm in the minority in this country.

Meanwhile, even the GOPigs provide the necessary distraction (and entertainment). But, still, I wonder what's happening, what's going to happen. The news that China would no longer extend credit to the US was just about whispered, and maybe the report I read on rawstory.com wasn't true, but, if it was, it was the biggest story of the year so far, and it wasn't mentioned anywhere else.

Shiny thing, indeed. I wish I could be so easily distracted, but I'm watching my country come to an end in my lifetime, something I never anticipated.

Now, I hear Elizabeth Edwards will be on Oprah this week, and what's up with Octomom?

I like the sign that is above Obama's right shoulder too. It reads:

"Please do not take a table before you have ordered and have a number.

Please ask for assistance in moving tables.

Please give seating priority to others when appropriate."

Common courtesy reminders. Said in a courteous way (i.e., "please" ~ it's a request, not an order). And MOST of us "regular people" are generally considerate/kind to our fellow planetary inhabitants/diners ;-) .

58. This Really Pisses Me Off
Because I work about five blocks from Ray's and go out to lunch most days. The one day I decided to run across the street and bring a Quizzno's sub back to my office is the day Obama and Biden end up eating out at a place I might have been at had I not taken my lunch back to the office with me.

Damn my timing!

66. I was tempted to go there today and sit at the same table
I could tell my fictional grand children about that. "I sat on the same stool that the president sat on back in ought-nine."

59. It shows how often I eat out.
I live a few blocks from that place and never knew it existed. I pedal past that strip mall every weekend on my Saturday errands. Blimey, I'm a real eagle eye.

71. Well, actually,
$5.00 is not a great tip, especially in a jar that is shared by employees. By standard tipping conventions it is - based on 15 to 20 percent of the sale. But I gotta tell you, there is always the anticipation of a notably generous tip from someone who has money, celebrity, prestige...

That being said, I think he handled it perfectly. Any more would have brought on the wolves, as any less would have also done.
