I am watching Frost/Nixon. And trying to eat dinner. Bad move.
After all these years , I still get a visceral reaction to Nixon, no matter whose face is portraying him on screen. ( Hopkins was good, tho).
The seething hatred I felt for that man was unlike anything I have ever felt towards another human being.
Kissinger always ran a close 2nd, tho.

Bush? Pretty strong constant disgust and aversion, with occasional stupefied disbelief.

Nixon...there was no doubt HE was the guy in charge.

I dunno. I may have to delay watching this for awhile.

Am I the only one with that reaction after all this time???

1. No, you're not alone
For years, I had his funeral on tape, just for the sheer joy of knowing he was dead.

Loathesome, yes, far more loathesome than Chimpy Fucknuts, although, consider that Dick Cheney arouses the same revulsion in me as Nixon does. They were both "in charge," and so clearly venal, they deserve our enmity.

Chimpy Fucknuts was nothing but a sockpuppet, a pawn, a little prick, granted, but he wasn't The Decider. Not by a long shot.

Don't watch the movie while you're eating. I decided I couldn't see it, not ever. Even a dramatization is too much for me.

On the other hand, I started watching "Milk" yesterday, and it's looking sensational!

2. I will always have that reaction to Cheney and Rove
at a minimum with Bush* only a hair less disgust.

Nixon always struck me as a pathetic figure in the Greek Tragedy kind of mode... Maybe because I was very young during Watergate and not following quite as closely and because I never had a problem with seeing some good in Nixon despite his horrendous excesses. Bush* and his cronies though, I have a very difficult time finding ANY redeeming aspects.

7. You could probably say that...
...Nixon was brilliant, in a diabolical way. But it's kind of funny how he was brought down by some in-office tapes that he wasn't smart enough to erase.

14. oh...you are right...Cheney....
Yes, almost the same reaction, now that I think of it.
Well, same people, actually, so that explains it.

4. No, you are not alone.
I never thought there could be anyone more evil than Tricky Dicky. He still makes me cringe.

I may have been wrong about the most evil, though. If The Smirk did what I think he did, he wins, hands down.

6. I want to see it
I got serious love for Frank Langella.

As for Nixon portrayals, Dan Hedaya in http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144168">Dick is my favorite. That film is pure-dee genius.

8. It's in my Netflix queue, but I am so fond of Langella as an actor and have
so much loathing for Nixon as a pseudo-human, that I almost dread watching it. If Langella were a lesser actor, it would make things easier.

Had a little Langella-fest here recently -- "The Caller" -- imo a mediocre movie with Elliot Gould and Langella both used badly, but both giving brilliant performances, and "Starting Out In The Evening" which broke my heart. Lauren Ambrose and Langella work together as though they've been a team in front of a camera for years.

10. Starting Out in the Evening was so good
Haven't seen The Caller. Netflix is streaming it. I stopped ordering films through the mail from Netflix in favor of online streaming. I may just order that one though.

24. I would recommend the DVD for this one -- several times I had to back up
to understand what was happening, and it takes so long to back up and re-buffer when streaming. It's really not a well-written movie at all, but it was so good to see Elliot Gould back in the traces.

Wish we could get subtitles while streaming, but I shouldn't complain about a freebie, I guess!

9. The American Experience bio of Nixon is really worth watching (link)
http://www.pbs.org/video/video/979746298/program/979359091/topic/979379158

I'm too young to remember him, but I found this vid to be very informative. One thing that struck me was how Nixonian McCain's campaign was. Recommended.

12. Thanks, you saved me twenty bucks. Part of me said I "should" see this film, but from what I
had seen, it did not turn me on, nor have any other of Ron Howard's films. I think he's a terrible director, other than A BEAUTIFUL MIND.

17. I kept the little black & white TV that I watched his resignation speech on
just for a souvenir. That was a great day. I think I hate Bush and Cheney even more, but Dick was a real piece of work. I remember watching him during the Watergate thing and yelling at the TV; I really loathed that fucker.

21. While I fully supported the impeachment of Nixon,
and still do so decades after the fact, and am still glad he resigned...

in retrospect he looks great next to Reagan, Bush, and Bush, and holds his own next to Clinton.

I haven't seen Frost/Nixon; I've experienced enough stress over politics the last decade to make me avoid political topics, including political history, as entertainment.

23. The one thing I have to grudgingly give him credit for is, he suggested
a reverse income tax for the poorest of the poor, i.e. a guaranteed minimum income for everyone (sort of like Social Security).

That's a more liberal idea than many of our Dems come up with now.

We were living in California when I heard his "You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore" speech and I was overwhelmed with joy!!!

So then every time his face or voice surfaced during following years, I felt like he was Walking Zombie Liar Loser Dead.
