Police officer accused of drug distribution

WORCESTER — A 15-year veteran of the Police Department was indicted in federal court today on charges he conspired to distribute marijuana.

Seventeen people, among them Police Officer Carlos L. Burgos, have been charged in a wide-ranging drug investigation. Other defendants are charged with cocaine distribution.

Officer Burgos was arrested at the police station when he showed up for his shift this morning. Later, in U.S. District Court, where he made an initial appearance, the officer was dressed in his uniform pants and boots. He is due to be arraigned next week.

“When he reported to work today, he was immediately placed under arrest on the federal arrest warrant,” Police Chief Gary J. Gemme said.

Officer Burgos was allegedly involved in illegal activity that began in December.
