Going Up: Price of First-Class Stamp
Source: Unsure

Procrastinators, take note. Neither rain nor snow will stop the post office from raising its stamp price on Monday, May 11 by an extra two cents, giving the first-class stamp a hefty 44-cent price tag. (The post office estimates this price increase will cost the average family an extra $3 a year.)

At least the USPS had the class to wait until after Mother's Day (ahem, this Sunday) for people to send out their cards before jacking up the price of first-class mail. (Though the post office reviews, and usually increases, postage price every year around now.)

And while there's no stopping the march toward the new higher rate, you can at least keep the price of a stamp at its relatively lower rate of 42 cents by running out to snap up "Forever" stamps. Those stamps have no denomination printed on them, so they're honored, well, 'til the end of time—as long as you use them on one-ounce letters. But should you wait until Monday to purchase your Forever stamps, they'll be at the new rate of 44 cents.

Don't say we didn't warn you.

If only the health care system was half as good.

2. I was at the post office today!
So I learned this just in time. Bought 4 books of the Forever stamps. That will literally last *me* forever!

Thanks for the remind. I had no idea until the guy there asked if I wanted the new 44 cent stamps and I said "huh?"

Whew!

3. Damn cheap America! Stop your bitching!!
I'm thinking back to when postage was $0.03...and then it went to $0.04. Candy bars were $0.05, a gallon of gas was $0.29 a gallon, yes there was penny candy - and even 2 for 1 penny candy, etc, etc.

Well, the price of a letter is now $0.44, and I'm guessing you can't get that candy bar for much less than $0.60 at best, a gallon of gas is roughly $3-4.00 a gallon, etc. etc.

That old nickel just isn't what it used to be....neither is the dollar. Tough luck America, but pull your head out of your ass and do the math. Mailing a letter for $0.44 is a pretty good bargain, compared to what the rest of the world pays. You're damn LUCKY the Post Office is subsidized or you'd be paying a hell of a lot more.

Quit your bitching and find something worthwhile to bitch about. There's plenty to chose from.

5. Forgetting those countries with government subsidized postal services

we get pretty good value for not much money. Delivered anywhere across the United States for only 0.42 cents, generally within two or three days.

Kwitcherbitchen.

11. Are you sure you don't have 'forever' stamps? Look closely.
My letter carrier always gives me those when I need more stamps. (they will still have forever stamps after next Monday, they'll just cost .44 instead of .42) :D

6. I'll never complain about the cost of stamps mainly because I
just don't use a whole lot of them anymore, but wasn't the idea of the "Forever" stamp that you could use it "FOREVER" and it would be equivalent to whatever a regular stamp was at the time? Was that just our government playing a little trick on us again?

7. No trick.
A Forever stamp is good for postage on a one ounce first class letter- "forever". Buy one for 42 cents on Saturday and it will be worth 44 cents on Monday. When a first class letter costs $1.00 it will be worth $1.00.
