In the scene of Nero interrogating Captain Pike - did you expect to see him water boarded?

I think by implying being waterboarded rather than doing it, Abrams may have made a stronger impression on people. And to think, most people suggest that this film is all about glitz and glitter with no serious messages!

1. Too late. :)
I won't let your OP cloud my judgment.

As long as the messages aren't superficial, vague, or one-sided. TNG became one-sided in seasons 5 and 6. TOS was rather open-ended with the topical issues; letting the viewer - OMG - think for himself. Which is why I prefer it, otherwise visually dated as it is.

3. Haven't seen the movie yet, but clicked anyway
I'm not prone to conniptions if I encounter a 'spoiler' beforehand.

I agree that insinuated torture on the big screen can be even more effective than the simulated variety.

One question, however: did the waterboarding work? I'm betting that it didn't, yet that's one of the fundamental arguments the neocons claim for its use. Practically all experts in that field say that waterboarding produces results of the 'say anything' variety.

I can't imagine the writers of a Star Trek movie allowing such a mythic figure as Capt. Pike to endure waterboarding to the extent that he actually told the enemy the truth.

4. I did think that..... And I think it may have happened because his hair was wet
even though the method of torture finally shown was pure sci fi

I fully expected to behold the specters of Commander AWOL Bush and Dickie 'Five-Military-Deferments' Cheney, and all the other Republicon Chickenhawk Torture Freaks emerge from my box of popcorn.

I really did expect all the way to see waterboarding -- Republicon Homelander Chickenhawk anti-Christian, anti-American, anti-morality EVILDOING.
