Homeless, 9, and coping with a hard life
For Brehanna, a loss of school, friends and a beloved stuffed animal

updated 9:02 a.m. PT, Sat., May 9, 2009

After her father loses his construction job and her family is evicted from their home, a young girl struggles with her new life.

PORTLAND, Ore. - At first, 9-year-old Brehanna didn't seem to understand.

Her family was being evicted from their home in Tualatin, a Portland suburb. Her father, Joe Ledesma, a homebuilder for 20 years, was without a job and couldn't find another. He couldn't pay the $800 rent on the three-bedroom house where he, his wife Heidi and daughter lived.

And he couldn't get through to Brehanna as they packed the family's navy blue 1986 Pontiac Firebird that she would not be able to bring her bed. She would not be able to bring every toy or trinket, or that checkered desk she had spent hours painting and sanding, either.

***

"We are having a hard time paying rent," she tells her reading teacher Mary Weller. She yawned and coughed, battling the second cold she has caught in less than a month at the shelter.

"But if you want to pay rent and you need to get money you can donate blood," she says. "My dad does that."

2. What that's a very interesting tree, might I suggest looking at the rest of the forest?
You should not have to sell your fucking bodily fluids to make rent. That's fucked up.

12. Tualatin is incredibly expensive now. gentrification on the outskirts of
portland. I love that town. I feel so badly for these people. They kept the faith and now this? This is fucked up.

14. No, its not. Blood is one price, plasma is more. You cannot donate plasma until
about the 4th or so time thru.. that way they know your "clean". I guess its not actually donating to be paid for it, but there are places that pay you for your blood. when your poor, you know this.

5. Such a sad story. It reminds me of stories about the Great Depression.
This doesn't seem right in a country that is handing billions over to wall street and the banks.

10. Homelessness sucks but especially for kids
I am glad that the story ends on a happier note. Now she lives in a home that will be subsidized for a year.

13. Photos from the slide show accompanying the article...same link as O.P.

Nine-year-old Brehanna Ledesma cries as she sits outside a homeless day shelter in Portland, Ore., on March 10. Brehanna and her parents, Joe and Heidi Ledesma, were evicted and became homeless in December after Joe lost his home builder job.

In the woods outside a homeless day shelter in Portland, Ore., Brehanna cuddles close to her father.

Brehanna looks up at her father with tears in her eyes as she asks him what happened to her stuffed monkey.

15. You know, there is NO EXCUSE for this in this country.
NOT

ONE

Oh there are reasons (corporat greed and a government that sanctions it) - but valid excuses? NOT ONE.

16. The happy ending

Why MSNBC is relaying this story in May, while burying to the very end the resolution details previously published in April, is something you should question. What tipped me off is that some of the photos are obviously staged, especially the one with the girl huddled in the corner and the close-up full of tears.

Once we step back and see that this story intends to manipulate our feelings, the next question to ask is why it was published this way.

Anyone following the stories I post in economics knows I'm the first one to point out how much people are suffering on the ground level, while the politicians fritter away our money, giving it to frauds and thieves. Still this story sets off alarm bells for me. Oddly enough the April photos seem to have been removed from MSNBC while they are still available elsewhere. Something is wrong here, folks - watch your wallets.
